Volleyball's Run Ends in NCCAA Semis

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball ended their season on Saturday in the NCCAA semifinals as Colorado Christian came away with a straight set victory to advance to the championship match later today.

The Warriors (27-10) were stifled all day on the offensive end, hitting just .088 for the match. SWU posted their best set attack percentage in the first at .136. The Cougars (26-12) hit a robust .324 for the match including topping .400 in the first set, a 25-15 win. CCU took the next two sets, 25-14, 25-17.

In the first set the Warriors fell behind 8-4 before a three point run to pull back to within one at 8-7. SWU kept it close until the Cougars scored three straight to start a 10-2 run that put them up 21-12.

The second set was a similar story as the Cougars seized the lead with a small run and kept the Warriors at arm's length. CCU led 9-7 but scored three straight to go up 12-7. The Warriors fought back to within four at 16-12 on a kill from Sarah Hughey but CCU scored the next five points to take a commanding 21-12 lead. The Cougars finished off the set with the final three points to win 25-14.

The Warriors showed their resolve in the third, taking five of the first six points to force an early timeout from Colorado Christian. The Cougars scored seven of the next eight out of the timeout to take an 8-6 lead. SWU battled back to tie the match at 11-11 after an attack error by the Cougars, but CCU took the next three and seven of eight to hold an 18-12 lead. The teams traded points most of the rest of the way as CCU closed out the match on a kill from Taylor Sturms.

SWU was led by Sarah Hughey's nine kills as the redshirt sophomore hit a team-best .375 in the match. Cherilyn Ramsey added eight kills and a .300 attack in her final match as a Warrior. She also added eight digs. Tori Wanner wrapped up her career with a team-high 11 digs. Megan Widener led the team with 23 assists.

Sarah Hughey was named to the All-Tournament team after collecting 54 kills (3.6/set) during the five-match run. The redshirt sophomore also hit .359 during the tournament, had 13 digs and 10 total blocks.
