Warriors Advance to Semis with Sweep of Oakland City

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball is headed to the final four at the NCCAA National Tournament after defeating Oakland City 3-0 in Friday's quarterfinal match. This year's tournament is being held at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The Warriors (27-9) advance to Saturday's semifinals and will face Colorado Christian at noon. Colorado Christian entered the tournament as the #3 seed and posted a perfect 3-0 record in pool play, all in three sets, before defeating Houghton in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

SWU improved to 3-1 in the tournament after a 2-1 pool play record. All four matches have been settled in three sets.

Sarah Hughey led the Warriors with 15 kills, hitting .419 in the process as the Warriors' offense came in at a .328 clip. Jacinta Hoffpauir added 11 kills while Cherilyn Ramsey added 10. Alysia Cruell chipped in with eight as Courtney Williams and Megan Widener each had five.

Courtney O'Brien led the defense with 13 digs as Tori Wanner added 11. Ramsey just missed a double-double with nine digs. Milica Stamenic also collected nine digs. Widener racked up a match-high 48 assists.

The Warriors and Mighty Oaks came out on fire in the first set as SWU hit .389 while Oakland City put up a .310 mark. SWU continued the success into the second set with a .357 attack while Oakland City regressed to .231. The Warriors had their worst set in the third, hitting just .250 but the Mighty Oaks came in at .214.

SWU quickly grabbed a 12-4 lead in the first set after Oakland City won the first two points. The Warriors collected nine kills in their first 12 points. Oakland City rallied late in the set, closing a 17-9 SWU lead down to two at 21-19. A kill from Hoffpauir followed by two from Hughey brought the Warriors to set point, which they won on an attack error from Oakland City.

The Warriors raced out to an early lead again in set two but Oakland City battled back to tie the set 13-13. Three straight points from the Warriors gave them a 16-13 lead as the teams traded points until SWU took back-to-back points to extend their lead to 22-17. The Warriors won back-to-back points to win the set 25-19.

The third set was the closest as Oakland City turned an 11-10 deficit into a 17-12 lead by winning seven of eight points. The Mighty Oaks led 19-14 before the Warriors embarked on a 8-0 run that flipped the set back in favor of the Warriors, 22-19. A kill from Williams ended the set 25-22 and sent the Warriors into the semifinals.
