Warriors Drop Final Pool Play Match, Will Start Knockout Round Later Today

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball dropped their final match of pool play at the NCCAA National Tournament, 3-0 at the hands of top-seed Trinity Christian on Friday morning. The tournament is being held at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The Warriors finish pool play at 2-1 while the Trolls finish with an unblemished 3-0 mark. All eight teams in the field will move on to the single elimination tournament that begins later this evening. The Trolls will be the top-ranked team out of Pool A and face the fourth-place team from Pool B at 4 p.m. while the Warriors finish as the number two team from Pool A and will take on Pool B's third place team. Oakland City University and McMurry University are currently playing to sort out those positions, the winner finishes third and faces SWU while the loser will take on TCC.

After a strong offensive output on Thursday the Warriors struggled against the Trolls (35-10) on Friday morning. The Warriors hit just .179 for the match while TCC came in at a .330 clip. The Trolls collected 20 block asissts led by Brittany Dykstra's six.

SWU (26-9) was led by Sarah Hughey's 12 kills and .308 attack percentage. Cherilyn Ramsey added nine kills and a .292 percentage but the rest of the team had just 12 kills and a .071 attack. Alysia Cruell paced the defense with 10 digs and Megan Widener led the way with 28 assists.

The Warriors were never able to take a lead in the first set, closing the gap to within one at 10-9 midway through the set. The Trolls scored five of the next seven to take a 15-11 lead but it wasn't until they scored four straight to turn a 16-13 lead into a 20-13 advantage. The Trolls closed the set on a 9-1 run.

SWU fought back in the second set, putting together several small 3-0 runs and turned a 11-10 deficit into a 16-13 lead that forced a TCC timeout.  The Warriors led 19-15 before the Trolls reeled off six in a row that didn't stop until SWU had used both of their timeouts and the Trolls led 21-19.

A pair of kills – one each from Ramsey and Cruell – tied the set at 21-21 but the Trolls scored three straight to take a 24-21 lead. After a kill from Hughey, the Trolls finished the set with a kill from Lauren Macadlo.

The teams traded points until TCC scored five straight – thanks to four kills – to open a 5-5 set to a 10-5 advantage.  The Warriors tried to rally late, scoring six of seven to close an eight point deficit down to three at 22-19 but the Trolls got a kill from Brittany Dykstra and a pair of blocks to end the match.

Trinity had three players reach double figures in kills led by Lauren Macadlo's 12. Gina Ryan and Michelle Busscher added 11 and 10 respectively. Busscher led the team with 15 digs while Ryan added 10 and Rachel Verhage added 11.
