NEWBERRY, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's basketball snapped a season-high two-game winning streak on Saturday night with a 99-80 defeat at the hands of No. 21/18 Newberry College in a nonconference matchup.
The Warriors (3-7) trailed by 18, 61-43, against the undefeated and nationally ranked Wolves at halftime. Newberry (10-0) forced 29 turnovers in the game with their frantic full-court press. SWU actually shot 56 percent from the floor and nailed 10 of 20 from beyond the arc but the Wolves converted 35 points off of turnovers.
After a slow start the Warriors closed the gap in the second half with a 16-6 run in the first 4:43 of the second half to close to within eight at 67-59. A three by Jamaral Kearse brought the deficit down to five at 77-72 but the Wolves answered with a three of their own that started a 12-2 run to go back up by 15. The Warriors were unable to close the gap under 10 the rest of the way.
SWU was able to get back in the game from beyond the arc, making seven of their 10 threes in the second half. Kearse connected on both of his attempts in the second half and scored six of his eight points in 27 minutes off the bench.
Darius Sharpe made all three of his attempts in the second half and scored 10 of his 16 points after halftime. Sharpe finished 5 of 8 from beyond the arc and added three rebounds and three assists. Kenny Holmes led the Warriors with 18 points including three triples. The junior guard added a team-high eight assists.
Both starting forwards were also in double figures as Dwayne Bryant scored 13 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, both season highs. Bryant also had three blocks. Mike Lieberman added 11 points and six rebounds for the Warriors.
Newberry was led by James Ashby's 16 points. The Wolves made 14 of 38 from beyond the arc and shot 51 percent overall. Newberry also converted on 15 of 17 free throws while the Warriors made just 6 of 11.
The Wolves won the season's first meeting between these two clubs 118-78 in Tysinger Gymnasium.
Southern Wesleyan will take the next two weeks off before jumping back into action on Dec. 31 at Lander. The Warriors will kick-off the New Year against Limestone in Tysinger on Jan. 3.
