Volleyball closes regular season with sweep of Mount Olive

Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball completed the regular season on Saturday with a shutout victory over Mount Olive, taking down the Trojans in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-21.

The Warriors jumped out to big leads in each set, leading 8-3 in the first, 8-5 in the second and 6-1 in the third.  SWU hit .278 for the match including a .324 clip in the first set and a .419 mark in the second.  UMO was limited to just a .119 mark for the match.

Sarah Hughey led all players with 12 kills, the only player to reach double figures on the day and the 24th time she's reached that mark in 30 matches this season.  Hughey hit .500 in the match on Saturday, reaching those 12 kills on just 20 attempts.  She also had four block assists to lead the team.

Jacinta Hoffpauir and Cherilyn Ramsey added nine kills each as Courtney Williams and Alysia Cruell added five each.  Tori Wanner led SWU with 13 digs and Milicia Stamenic chipped in with 10.  Megan Widener led all players with 38 assists and also added nine digs.

After UMO closed to within three points at 16-13 in the first set, the Warriors scored three straight before a timeout broke the run.  The teams traded points before Sarah Hughey pulled the Warriors to set point before a UMO attack error gave the set to the Warriors.

The Trojans bounced back in the second and grabbed a 9-8 lead after trailing early.  A quick 4-0 run by the Warriors swung the margin back in the home team's favor and another 4-0 run later in the set broke open a 17-14 SWU lead to a 21-14 advantage. Cherilyn Ramsey ended the set with one of her nine kills.

After the Warriors took the first five points in set three, the Trojans again rallied, this time tying the set at 11-11.  In almost identical fashion to the second set, the Warriors reeled off a run to seize the lead for good. An 8-2 run put the Warriors up six at 19-13 and provided enough cushion as UMO made one last charge.  The Trojans cut the six point deficit in half at 21-18 and after SWU pulled to within match point at 24-18, the Trojans again took three straight points before a service error gave the three-set win to the Warriors.

SWU is ineligible for the Conference Carolinas tournament as a year two candidacy member transitioning to NCAA II. The Warriors will wait for their seed and schedule in the NCCAA South Regional which is set to be played Nov. 21-22 at Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla.
