Box Score

CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan men's soccer lost a heartbreaker on Thursday, 3-2 in overtime to Erskine in Conference Carolinas action at Childs Field.

The Warriors (8-5, 2-4 CC) jumped out to an early lead as Joao Oliveira netted the first of two first-half goals for the Warriors in the 8th minute, scoring off a beautiful feed from Ivan Malagon.  Erskine (6-4, 3-1-2 CC) found the net twice, first in the 26th minute then again a minute later.  Andrew Settlemire found the net first for the Flying Fleet and was followed by Jack Power who scored off assists from Martin Maschio and Stian Tsesmetsis.

Both sides had several more chances throughout the match as the team combined for 40 shots, 24 coming from the Warriors.  As the clock ticked down towards the end of regulation either team could have found the game-winner with one subtle bounce in the other direction. Ruben Rodriguez saved the game for the Warriors as Andrew Settlemire let a rocket rip from close range but the junior from Spain sprawled out and knocked the ball outside of the goal frame.

In the overtime session Tsesmetsis was on the receiving end of a cross from Luke Boyce and Tsesmetsis knocked the ball in front of the net and it trickled past the line for the game-winner, just 46 seconds into the extra session.

Rodriguez made six saves in net for the Warriors as did Fiore Costa for the Flying Fleet.  Joao Oliveira and Ivan Malagon each took six shots for SWU as Noel Fischer added five more.

The Warriors travel to Emmanuel on Saturday for a match in the Lil' Bronze Peach Series. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
