Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan snapped a four-game losing streak on Monday, defeating Columbia (S.C.) College 85-76 in an afternoon tilt at Tysinger Gymnasium.
The Warriors (3-6) had four players in double figures, led by Christiana Perkins' 19 points. The win is the first for SWU since a Nov. 15 win over Spring Hill, also at home. Three of the four losses came on the road. The Warriors are 2-2 at home.
Perkins was joined by Kiara Coleman who had 17 points as well as Chelsie Waters who scored 13. Briana Seda chipped in with 12 off the bench. Coleman scored 12 of her 17 in the first half as the Warriors pounded the ball inside where the Koalas had no answer early on. Perkins scored 15 in the first half, continually slashing to the basket and getting to the line six times, making all six attempts.
The Warriors took the lead for good at 6-4 with 17:06 to play in the first half after Columbia scored the first basket of the game, their only lead on the day. An 11-2 run gave the Warriors their first double-digit lead at 27-16 with 9:10 to play. They led 47-34 at the break.
In the second half the Warriors pushed the lead out to 16 at 66-50 with 9:23 to play. Columbia fought back to close the gap to within five several times inside the final two minutes but did not get any closer.
The Warriors shot 47-percent overall from the floor after hitting 52-percent in the first half. Columbia shot just 29-percent in the first half but bounced back in the second to shoot 38-percent overall. Neither team shot the ball well from beyond the arc, as the Warriors made just 2-of-7 and the Koalas just 4-of-13.
"I am happy for the team first and foremost," said head coach John Davis. "We controlled the ball much better today and were resilient throughout the entire game, but we have to rebound better. We were able to get stops, but giving up 22 offensive rebounds is not going to get it done on a consistent basis."
The Koalas dominated the glass, pulling down 22 offensive rebounds and 50 overall on the day. The Warriors grabbed just 36. Columbia was led by Azia Gibson's double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Michelle Anaya just missed a double-double of her own with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors managed to take care of the ball a lot better than Columbia, turning it over just 12 times compare to 22 for the Koalas.
The Warriors will be back in action one more time before the break, hosting Limestone College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a game that will be an exhibition for the Warriors.
