Southern Wesleyan Falls on the Road to King

Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell to the King Tornado on Wednesday evening in an 86-50 final score.

The Warriors shot 27% from the field with Makayla Raines leading the team with 12 points.  Peyton Looky had three of the Warriors nine assists.  Behind Looky, both Jordan Race and Trinity Nesbitt had two assists in the game.

Southern Wesleyan collected 34 rebounds in the game.  Makayla Raines had seven rebounds while Trinity Nesbitt followed with five rebounds.  Both Raines and Jordan Race blocked attacks by the Tornado.  Of the four steals, Raines had two.

How It Happened

An early foul by the Warriors sent Alayna Smith to the charity stripe.  Smith knocked down both her shots to give the Tornado the early advantage.  However, the Warriors answered as DeYana Hayes got the ball out beyond the arc to Savanna Nicholson.  Nicholson fired off a three pointer to give the Warriors the lead.  Aliyah Hawkins and Jaelyn West hit three pointers.  Hayes laid the ball up into the basket.  With just over five minutes on the clock, Peyton Looky laid the ball up into the basket.  Makayla Raines and Looky each put up three pointers to keep the Warriors within one point of the Tornado.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second quarter with a three pointer out of the hands of Makayla Raines.  The Tornado pressed ahead as Jaelyn West wove around the defense and laid the ball up into the basket.  King would not back down as Mary Elizabeth Fox got up a couple more shots.  With just over a minute on the clock, Kyra Price knocked down her first three pointer of the game, but the Tornado answered with a three pointer out of the hands of Aliyah Hawkins.  King led 44-24 at halftime.

The Tornado continued their attacks as Jaelyn West got up a layup.  King continued to attack the basket as West and Riley Nelson each got up shots.  West went up and knocked down a three pointer, but the Warriors countered with a three pointer out of the hands of Makayla Raines.  Jordan Race put up a mid-range shot.  King would not relent as Samantha Lee hit back-to-back three pointers.  Race and Kyra Price got up a couple layups in the final seconds of the third quarter.

An early foul in the fourth quarter sent Makayla Raines to the charity stripe.  Raines hit one of her shots.  Jordan Race passed the ball out beyond the arc to Savanna Nicholson.  Nicholson stepped right outside the arc to hit a three pointer.  However, baskets by Jaelyn West allowed King to extend on their lead.  Trinity Nesbitt laid the ball up into the basket.  King pressed on as Mary Elizabeth Fox and Samantha Lee each hit three pointers.  Maris Kate Payseur and Jordan Race knocked down back-to-back three pointers, but the Warriors could not pass the Tornado as King walked away with an 86-50 final score.

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on February 21 at 2pm.  They will travel to Florence, SC on February 23 to take on the Francis Marion Patriots.  The Warriors will wrap up the regular season on February 25 on the road as they travel to Franklin Springs to take on the Emmanuel Lions.
