Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – After a slow start the Southern Wesleyan volleyball team rebounded to sweep Emmanuel 3-0 in the second semifinal of the NCCAA South Region Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Warriors (27-12) trailed 19-12 and 24-21 in the first set before rallying to win the set. SWU fended off four set points before eventually taking the set 27-25 with three straight points. Cherilyn Ramsey recorded five of her match-high 15 kills in the set. The junior had five kills in each of the three sets.
Emmanuel hit .282 in the first set but couldn't get over the .120 clip the rest of the way. The Lions (22-12) hit .162 for the match while the Warriors hit .209 including a .263 clip in the first set, their match best.
SWU tallied 10 service aces as Alysia Cruell and Jacinta Hoffpauir each had three. Hayley Hoover just missed a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills. She hit .280 for the match. Ramsey led the team with a .344 attack. Hoffpauir added eight kills and a .250 clip.
Kelsey Deerinwater led the team with 11 digs, matching Becky Moye from Emmanuel. Megan Widener led all players with 34 assists. The sophomore added two kills, five digs and three blocks. The Warriors had five total blocks as Emmanuel racked up nine. Emmanuel was led by Megan Bright's nine kills.
The Warriors have defeated Emmanuel four times this season, twice in the regular season and again in the SSAC Tournament before tonight's win.
In the day's first semifinal top seeded Shorter defeated Southeastern 3-1. The Warriors and Hawks will battle for the South Region title and a berth to the NCCAA National Tournament on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Tysinger Gymnasium.
