Box Score CENTRAL, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan volleyball suffered their first loss in Southern States Athletic Conference play, losing 3-1 to the University of Mobile on Friday night.
The Warriors (20-8, 7-1 SSAC) struggled all night with the block from Mobile as the Rams (15-9, 8-1 SSAC) piled up 11.5 blocks on the night. Caroline Ennis and Sara Van Wert led the way with five each. SWU hit just .109 for the match and while Mobile wasn't a whole lot better, they were effective enough to pull out the four-set victory 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22.
Cherilyn Ramsey led all players with 15 kills and hit .258. Courtney Williams added 12 kills. Mobile had four players reach double figures in kills, led by Maegen Wilkins' 13. Megan Widener led SWU with 37 assists and also added 10 digs. Kelsey Deerinwater added 22 digs to lead all players.
Mobile broke open a 13-13 first set by scoring three straight and eight of 11 as the Warriors committed three attack errors and one service error in the stretch. SWU responded in the second, seizing control as Williams served eight straight points for the Warriors. The Rams made things interesting late, rallying from an 18-10 hole to make it 21-18 but in the end the Warriors took the set as Williams delivered the final kill.
The Warriors looked to have the third set in hand after overcoming an 11-8 deficit by scoring 12 of the next 15 to take a 19-14 lead. Mobile was up to the task as they closed the set on a 11-2 run including seven straight at one point. The Rams carried all the momentum into the fourth and opened a 10-4 lead. SWU fought back and closed to within one at 22-21 but three kills by Mobile close out the set and the match.
The Warriors fall from the ranks of the unbeaten in the SSAC and leave Spring Hill alone at the top. The Warriors and the Badgers will hook up on Saturday at 12 p.m. at Tysinger. SWU and Mobile are in a virtual tie for second in the SSAC with one loss apiece. Emmanuel and Coastal Georgia have three losses each and are tied for fourth.
