How It Happened:
The first five on the floor for Coach Davis' group tonight were
Kaliah Kendrick,
Peyton Looky,
Rahkhia Mack,
DeYana Hayes, and
Alexis Glover. Erskine scored the game's first point with a 1-2 trip from the free-throw line, and then Southern Wesleyan responded with an impressive 11-0 run getting made threes from Freshmen
Lexie Ransom,
Faith Yelton, and Looky. Kendrick and
Asia Pearley each hit threes later in the opening quarter as the Warriors hit all five of their perimeter attempts and led by 13 through 10. SWU also scored the first three points of the second quarter, pushing their lead up to 16 shortly into it. The Flying Fleet did respond well to that stretch and cut the lead to seven, but Pearley answered with back-to-back scores to regain control of the game.
Kyra Price became the sixth different Warrior to hit a first-half three with 1:34 left in the half, sending the home team into the locker room with a 12-point lead.
Southern Wesleyan went nearly 3:00 without a score in the early stages of the second half, but Erskine only scored one field goal in the first 5:01 of the third quarter so the Warrior lead wasn't shorted by much. Despite the dueling droughts, the two teams each outscored their second-quarter totals. SWU closed out the third period on a 9-2 run across 2:18 seconds thanks to second-chance scoring and points off turnovers. The latter has been a key category for the team throughout the season, as they are at their best when forcing opponents into turnovers and turning them into quick buckets on the other end. Tonight, the Warriors outscored the Flying Fleet 32-9 in points off turnovers and forced the visitors into 30 team turnovers. Erskine chipped off the SWU lead early in the fourth quarter, but Looky's second three of the night increased the Warrior lead to 20 with 3:31 to play, helping the Warriors pick up a much-needed conference win.
What's Next:
The Warriors have just two regular-season games remaining. They travel to Chowan on Saturday, February 22nd, followed by a matchup with Shorter University on Wednesday, February 26th, at Tysinger Gymnasium.
