Southern Wesleyan Soars Past Flying Fleet for the Sweep

Due West, SC – Southern Wesleyan swept the Erskine Flying Fleet Saturday afternoon.  They took game one 9-2 before run-ruling the Flying Fleet in game two in a 10-2 final score over the course of five innings.

The Warriors totaled 11 hits in the first game of the afternoon.  Olivia Haag led the Warriors by going three for five at the plate.  Behind her, three Warriors picked up two hits.  Addi Johnson, Hannah Truett and Amberly Way each doubled, and Way hit her eleventh home run of the season.  Way had three of the eight RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked four times and Taylor Palfrey stole two of the three bases.  The other stolen base came from Talissa Cannady.  Olivia Haag pitched the complete game for the Warriors and struck out two batters in the seven innings.

Southern Wesleyan posted nine hits in the second game of the day.  Abby Schreiner and Taylor Palfrey each had two hits.  Schreiner doubled.  Addi Johnson led the team with three RBIs coming from her three run home run.  The Warriors walked five times and Johnson stole a base.  Jaelyn Montfort pitched a complete game in game two.  Montfort struck out two over five innings.

How It Happened

Game One

Southern Wesleyan went on the offensive early in the first game of the afternoon.  Addi Johnson reached first after being hit by a pitch.  She advanced to second as Olivia Haag hit a single through the left side.  A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance sixty feet.  Avery Mercer followed as she reached on a walk to load up the bases.  With one out, Amberly Way walked to bring the first run in to score.

The Warriors extended their lead by one in the top of the second inning.  Taylor Palfrey reached first on an error and then stole second base.  With one out, Addi Johnson fouled out to right field, but Palfrey was able to advance to third on the play.  Olivia Haag put the ball into play in the form of a single hit through the left side to bring Palfrey in to score.

Erskine tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning as Chandler hit a two-run home run.

The game remained in a stalemate until the top of the fifth inning when the Warriors plated another run.  Avery Mercer led off with a walk and then came in to score when Amberly Way hit the ball to left center field for a double.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors broke the game open.  Avery Mercer led off with a walk and then came in to score when Hannah Truett hit a double to right center field.  With Truett on second, Amberly Way came up to the plate and hit the ball out of the park to extend the Warriors lead to 6-2.  Southern Wesleyan was not done as Talissa Cannady hit a single up the middle.  With one out and Cannady on first, Taylor Palfrey hit a single through the left side to advance Cannady to second.  Cannady moved on to third on a fly out by Emmy Copeland.  Palfrey then stole second.  With both runners in scoring position, Addi Johnson hit a double to left center field to bring both runners in to score.  Olivia Haag followed with a single to bring Johnson in to score to give the Warriors a 9-2 run victory in the first game of the afternoon against the Erskine Flying Fleet.

 

 

 

 

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan took the first runs of game two in the top of the second inning.  Abby Schreiner reached first on an error by the Flying Fleet's shortstop.  A single by Amberly Way allowed Schreiner to advance to second.  Talissa Cannady singled to right center field to allow Way to advance to third and brought Schreiner in to score.  Riley Wilson ground out to bring Way in to give the Warriors a 2-0 run advantage.

The Warriors scored again in the top of the third inning.  With two outs, Abby Schreiner hit a double to left center field.  Amberly Way put the ball into play into center field, but an error allowed Schreiner to come in to score to extend their lead to 3-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Warriors brought four more runs in to score.  Riley Wilson walked and then advanced to second as Taylor Palfrey hit a single through the left side.  Another single through the left side by Madison Truett allowed Palfrey to take second, but Riley Wilson was taken off third on the play.  An error by the first baseman allowed Addi Johnson to reach first and brought Palfrey in to score.  Johnson then stole second to put both runners in scoring position.  Olivia Haag hit a single up the middle to bring Truett in to score.  A walk to Avery Mercer loaded up the bases for Abby Schreiner.  Schreiner singled through the left side to bring both Johnson and Haag in to score to extend Southern Wesleyan's lead to 7-0.

Erskine brought two runs in to score in the bottom of the fourth inning off a fielder's choice and a single.

The Warriors were not finished as they extended their lead to eight in the top of the fifth inning.  Talissa Cannady led off with a walk.  With one out and Cannady at first, Taylor Palfrey hit a single up the middle to allow Cannady to advance to second.  Madison Truett hit into a fielder's choice that took Cannady off the bases.  With two on and two out, Addi Johnson stepped up to the plate and hit a home run to bring all the runners in to score.  Southern Wesleyan went on to claim a 10-2 run victory in game two of the afternoon.
