Warriors Unable to Pass Jaguars on the Road

Augusta, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell in the double header against the Augusta Jaguars on Tuesday afternoon.  The Warriors dropped game one 7-1 before falling in extra innings in game two in a 7-6 final score.

The Warriors totaled six hits in game one.  Addi Johnson and Talissa Cannady each had two hits.  Avery Mercer had the lone RBI of the game for the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan walked six times and Mercer stole a base.  Oliva Haag started the game and pitched three innings while striking out three.

Southern Wesleyan had eight hits in game two.  Addi Johnson led the team with two hits both being doubles.  The other doubles of the game came off the bats of Olivia Haag, Avery Mercer, Rebecca Lamb and Taylor Palfrey.  Amberly Way had a home run.  Both Mercer and Way had two RBIs.  The Warriors walked two times and Talissa Cannady was hit by a pitch.  Ella Grace Lawton started game two and struck out one batter.

How It Happened

Game One

Augusta took the first runs of game one as Poff and Roberts hit back-to-back doubles to give the Jaguars a 2-0 run advantage.

The Jaguars attacked the plate again in the top of the fourth inning as they brought five runs in to score to extend their lead to 7-0.

Southern Wesleyan fought back in the top of the seventh inning.  Taylor Palfrey led off with a single up the middle.  Palfrey advanced to second as Addi Johnson hit a single to left field.  With two out and two on, Avery Mercer singled to left center field to bring Palfrey in to score.  However, the Warriors fell 7-1 in game one to the Jaguars.

 

 

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan took the first runs of game two in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Olivia Haag reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop and then advanced to second.  Amberly Way sent the ball over the outfield fence to give the Warriors a 2-0 run advantage.

The Jaguars countered as a double by Winder allowed Bridges to come in to score to put Augusta within one run.

The Warriors regained their two run advantage in the top of the third inning.  Addi Johnson hit a double to center field and then advanced to third base when Olivia Haag laid down a sacrifice bunt.  Avery Mercer hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring Johnson in to score.

Augusta came back to within one run of Southern Wesleyan in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Southern Wesleyan attacked again in the top of the fifth inning.  With two outs, Addi Johnson hit her second double of the game, this time to left center field.  Olivia Haag followed with a double of her own to bring Johnson in to score.  With Haag at second, the Warriors hit their third double in as many at bats as Avery Mercer sent the ball to left center to bring Haag across home plate.

The Jaguars fought back as they plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 run lead.

The Warriors were not done as they went back on the offensive in the top of the seventh inning.  After back-to-back fielder's choice plays and Emmy Copeland pinch runner for Amberly Way at first, Rebecca Lamb came up to bat.  Lamb hit a double down the left field line to bring Copeland in to score to tie the game up.

However, the Augusta Jaguars claimed the walk-off victory in the bottom of the eighth inning off a single by Hanson.

 

 

 

 

What's Next

The Warriors will host their final home game of the 2024 season on April 18 as they welcome the Young Harris Mountain Lions in a double header beginning at 2pm.  They will wrap up the regular season on the road as they travel to Due West, SC to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet on April 20.
