Warriors Drop Double Header to Cavaliers on the Road

Wise, VA – Southern Wesleyan dropped the doubleheader against the UVA Wise Cavaliers on Friday afternoon.  They fell in game one in a 5-2 final and then dropped game two 13-2.

The Warriors picked up five hits in game one.  Both Amberly Way and Talissa Cannady had RBIs.  The Warriors walked three times, and Taylor Palfrey and Cannady each had stolen bases.  Way started on the mound for the Warriors and pitched four innings.  Autumn Barnhardt and Jaelyn Montfort came in to pitch in relief.

Southern Wesleyan had five hits in game two.  Avery Mercer and Amberly Way had the lone RBIs.  Taylor Palfrey stole two bases and Chalee Roper had one steal.  Olivia Haag started game two of the afternoon and pitched 1.1 innings while striking out two batters.  Autumn Barnhardt came in to pitch in relief.

How It Happened

Game One

The Cavaliers took the early lead off a two-run home run by McKnight in the bottom of the first inning.  In the bottom of the second inning, they scored their third run of the game.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the fourth inning.  Taylor Palfrey singled to third base and then stole second base.  A ground out by Addi Johnson allowed Palfrey to advance to third base.  With two outs, Amberly Way singled to center field to bring Palfrey across home plate.

A ground out by Huff allowed McCauley to in to score to extend UVA Wise's lead to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, Avery Mercer reached on a fielding error and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  A ground out by Amberly Way allowed Mercer to advance to third.  Talissa Cannady singled to center field to bring Mercer in to score.

The Cavaliers scored once more to win game one in a 5-2 final score.

 

 

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan struck first in the top of the first inning.  Taylor Palfrey reached first on an error and then stole second base.  With one out, Avery Mercer reached first on an error that allowed Palfrey to advance to third.  Amberly Way followed up with a single to left field to bring Palfrey in to score to give the Warriors a 1-0 run lead.

The lead was short lived as singles by Long and Johnson allowed the Cavaliers to take a 3-1 run lead.  UVA Wise went on to score five runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead.

With one out in the top of the third inning, Taylor Palfrey singled to third base and then stole second base.  Avery Mercer singled to left field to bring Palfrey across home plate.

UVA Wise would not relent as they scored in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to claim game two in a 13-2 final score.

 

 

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Atlanta, GA on February 28 to take on the Clark Atlanta Panthers.  They will return to Central, SC on March 9 to host the Carson-Newman Eagles.  The Warriors will open up Conference Carolinas action on March 11 as they travel to Belmont, NC to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
