Four Post Double Digits as Warriors Soar Past Flying Fleet

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan swept passed the Erskine Flying Fleet on Saturday afternoon as they claimed an 84-48 point victory.

The Warriors shot 60.3% from the field and were 64.3% from the free throw line in their fourth Conference Carolinas victory of the season.  Four Warriors posted double digits with Taylin Smith leading the team with 14.  Dynasty Shegog (13), Lexi Greffen (12) and Asia Pearly (10) also posted double digits.  Of the 18 assists, Greffen and Tristen Berry each picked up four.

Southern Wesleyan totaled 38 rebounds in the victory over Erskine.  Asia Pearly led the Warriors with seven boards.  Pearly went on to picked up three blocks.  Shelby Glance followed with the remaining two blocks.  The Warriors totaled 17 steals with Rahkhia Mack leading the team with five.  Mack was followed by Lexi Greffen followed with four steals.

How It Happened

A foul early in the game allowed Shanece Mitchell to make a free throw and give the Flying Fleet the early lead.  However, the Warriors fought back as back-to-back baskets by Lexi Greffen and Alexis Glover allowed the Warriors to take the lead.  Shelby Glance collected a pass from Kaliah Kendrick and put up a jump shot to extend the Warriors lead to six.  A layup by Albany Wilson allowed the Flying Fleet to cut the Warriors lead down to four.  However, Glance laid the ball up seconds later to allow Southern Wesleyan's lead to extend back to six.  Jordan Race stole the ball and race down the court to lay the ball up and give the Warriors a 15-7 point lead with just under a minute on the clock.

Ianna Odulaja fouled Kaliah Kendrick early in the second quarter to send her to the line.  Kendrick hit both her free throw shots to extend the Warriors lead to eleven.  Anzya Cook passed the ball over to Reilly Ward who stepped beyond the arc and hit a three pointer.  However, a layup by Alexis Glover in the paint allowed the Warriors to regain their ten point lead.  Southern Wesleyan pushed on as back-to-back layups by Asia Pearly allowed the Warriors to take a fifteen point lead with just under five minutes left in the quarter.  Taylin Smith stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three pointer to give the Warriors a 37-17 point lead going into the locker room.

The Flying Fleet took the first points of the third quarter on free throws by Shanece Mitchell.  Lexi Greffen stole the ball away and raced down the court before laying the ball up to maintain the Warriors twenty point lead.  Kaliah Kendrick passed the ball down to Lexi Greffen who laid it up into the basket.  A steal by Greffen seconds later resulted in two more points for the Warriors to extend their lead to 45-19 with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter.  Greffen did not back down as she hit back-to-back layups for the Warriors.  Jordan Race passed the ball over to Dynasty Shegog who stepped beyond the arc to hit a three pointer.  Erskine countered with back-to-back three pointers by Anzya Cook.  However, Taylin Smith put down her second three pointer of the game with just under two minutes on the clock to put the Warriors on top 62-28.

Southern Wesleyan continued to push ahead with a jump shot by Taylin Smith.  Nyah Garner hit a jump shot.  Erskine challenged back with layups by Janelle Carter.  However, the Warriors pushed on with back-to-back baskets by Dynasty Shegog and S'Moriyah Rice.  Jordan Race rebounded the ball and sent it down to Shegog who laid it up in the paint.  Rice collected a pass from Shegog and put up a shot from beyond the arc.  The Flying Fleet countered with a three pointer out of the hands of Anzya Cook.  Southern Wesleyan went on to claim the victory as they defeated the Flying Fleet in a 84-48 final score.

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on January 17 as they host the King Tornado at 5pm.  They will then travel to Franklin Springs, GA on January 20 as they take on the Emmanuel Lions.  Southern Wesleyan will return to their home court of Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 27 as they host the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
