Offensive Surge Allows Warriors to Split Doubleheader Against Hawks

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan went on an offensive run to claim the first game of the afternoon in a 22-5 final score.  They went on to drop the second game in a 13-12 final score.

The Warriors collected 20 hits in the first game of the afternoon.  Emma Jo Wolfe and Emmy Copeland led the team with four hits.  Behind them Talissa Cannady had three hits.  Six Warriors doubled in the game with Copeland leading the team with three doubles.  Wolfe tripled.  Wolfe and Copeland each had four RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked three times and both Cannady and Johnson stole bases .  Emma Jo Wolfe started on the mound and pitched three innings while striking out two batters.  Ella Grace Lawton came in to pitch in relief and struck out two.

Southern Wesleyan went on to pick up 20 hits once again in the second game of the series.  Emma Jo Wolfe led off the inning with four hits.  She was followed by Talissa Cannady and Sarah Prater with three hits.  Both Ryanne Yarborough and Autumn Barnhardt had doubles.  Addi Johnson and Emmy Copeland tripled, and Prater picked up two home runs.  Southern Wesleyan walked twice.  Barnhardt started game two on the mound and pitched six innings while striking out two batters.

How It Happened

Game One

Southern Wesleyan attacked quickly in the bottom of the first inning.  Emma Jo Wolfe led off the inning with a single up the middle.  Talissa Cannady followed with a single through  the left side and then advanced to third on an error by left field.  Wolfe came in to score on the play.  A single through the left side by Addi Johnson scored Cannady.  Johnson then stole second base.  A fielder's choice by Ryanne Yarborough allowed Johnson to advance to third.  With two runners in scoring position and one out, a fielder's choice by Sarah Prater loaded the bases.  Emmy Copeland hit a double to left center to bring Johnson and Yarborough in to score.  Autumn Barnhardt walked to load up the bases once again.  With two outs, Emma Jo Wolfe doubled to left center to bring all three runners in to score.  Talissa Cannady singled to right field to bring Wolfe across home plate.  Cannady then stole second to put her in scoring position.  Addi Johnson doubled down the left field line to score Cannady.  A single by Ryanne Yarborough to left field allowed Johnson to score and gave the Warriors a 10-0 run advantage.

Chowan countered in the top of the second inning as two runs came in to score.

The Warriors attacked again in the bottom of the second inning.  With one out, Emmy Copeland doubled down the left field line.  A double to right center by Autumn Barnhardt allowed Copeland to come in and score.  Charity Dennis followed with a double to right center to score Barnhardt.  Emma Jo Wolfe followed with a triple to right field to bring Dennis home and push the Warriors lead to 13-2.  Talissa Cannady singled down the left field line to bring Wolfe home.  Johnson flew out to right field to allow Cannady to advance to second.  A passed ball advanced Cannady to third.  With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Ryanne Yarborough singled to center field to extend the Warriors lead to 15-2.

The Hawks brought in another run in the top of the third inning.

Southern Wesleyan was not done as they plated more runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Sarah Prater led off the inning with a double to right field.  A single by Emmy Copeland put runners at the corners.  Autumn Barnhardt hit into a fielder's choice, but an error on the play allowed Prater to score while keeping two runners on the bases.  Charity Dennis singled through the right side to bring Copeland in.  Emma Jo Wolfe singled to the pitcher to load up the bases .  A walk to Talissa Cannady brought in the third run of the inning.  Addi Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Dennis in to score.  With two outs, Kori Rominger singled to center field to bring Wolfe in.  Sarah Prater walked to load the bases up once again.  With the bases loaded, Emmy Copeland hit her third double of the game to bring both Rominger and DeBerry in to score.

Chowan countered with runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.  However, the Warriors took the first game of the series in a 22-5 final score.

 

 

 

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan took the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning.  Emma Jo Wolfe led off the inning as she singled down the left field line.  Talissa Cannady grounded out to advance Wolfe to second.  With one out, Addi Johnson tripled to left field to bring Wolfe home.  Kori Rominger singled to third base to bring Johnson in to score and put the Warriors on top 2-0.

The Warriors extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Autumn Barnhardt led off by reaching first on a walk.  Charity Dennis laid down a bunt single to allow Barnhardt to advance to second.  A single to third base by Emma Jo Wolfe then loaded up the bases for Talissa Cannady.  Cannady singled to center field to put the Warriors on top 3-0.  Addi Johnson singled to score Dennis while keeping the bases loaded for Ryanne Yarborough.  Yarborough then doubled down the right field line to score both Johnson and Cannady to push the Warriors ahead 6-0.

Chowan countered as a single by Reid and a sacrifice fly out by Matheny brought two runs in to score.

Southern Wesleyan pushed on in the bottom of the third inning.  With one out, Autumn Barnhardt doubled to left center field.  Charity Dennis singled to center field to bring Barnhardt across home plate.  Emma Jo Wolfe singled to put two runners on and bring Talissa Cannady back up to bat.  Cannady singled to right field to allow Dennis to score and extend the Warriors lead to six runs.

Ryanne Yarborough led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single through the left side.  With one out, Sarah Prater came up to bat and hit a home run over the left field wall to bring two more runs in to score.  Emmy Copeland tripled down the right field line and then came in to score on a wild pitch.

The Hawks were not discouraged as they challenged the Warriors in the top of the fifth inning by plating eight runs.  They continued to push ahead in the top of the sixth inning as a double by Leon put them ahead of the Warriors 13-11.

The Warriors challenged once again in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sarah Prater hit her second home run of the game.  However, the Warriors fell to the Hawks in a 13-12 final score.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Due West, SC on March 28 to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet.  They will remain on the road on April 1 as they travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 1 and 3 p.m.  The Warriors will travel to Greenwood, SC on April 4 to take on the Lander Bearcats.
