Warriors Soar Around Flying Fleet to Victory

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan picked up their fourth victory in five games on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Erskine Flying Fleet in a 60-36 final score.

The Warriors shot 42.3% from the field.  Brittany Mack led the team with 14 points.  She was followed by both Lexi Greffen and Allie Newberry with 11 points.  Southern Wesleyan collected 12 assists with Mack leading the team with three.  Greffen, Newberry and Brooke Henricks each followed with two assists.

Southern Wesleyan totaled 51 rebounds during the game.  Alexis Glover led the team with 13.  She was joined in double digits by Lexi Greffen with 10 rebounds, giving her a double-double game.  Shelby Glance picked up two blocks.  The Warriors collected eight steals with Tristen Berry recording three.  Brittany Mack followed Berry with two steals.

How It Happened

Erskine took the first points of the evening on free throws by Janelle Carter.  However, a three pointer by Tristen Berry put the Warriors on top.  The Flying Fleet pushed on as Mariah Corry put up a three pointer.  The Warriors were not done as Lexi Greffen passed the ball under the net to Brittany Mack who laid it up to give Southern Wesleyan a 6-5 point lead.  A layup by Greffen and three pointer by Mack allowed Southern Wesleyan to extend their lead to four points.

The Flying Fleet tied the game up on a layup by Shanece Mitchell.  However, Allie Newberry laid the ball up into the basket shortly afterwards to put Southern Wesleyan right back on top.  Anzya Cook stepped beyond the arc and sunk her first three pointer of the day.  Shelby Glance collected a pass from Caroline Reese and put up a jump shot to extend the Warriors lead to 23-17 with just under four minutes left in the half.  A last second three pointer out of the hands of Tristen Berry allowed the Warriors to lead 28-20 at halftime.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a layup by Brittany MackShelby Glance hit a jump shot to extend the Warriors lead to twelve.  However, it was short lived as Shanece Mitchell laid the ball up into the basket.  Allie Newberry put up back-to-back layups to put the Warriors back on top by twelve points.  Lexi Greffen put up a jump shot to give the Warriors a 42-27 point lead with just over a minute on the clock.  Mitchell collected a rebound and raced down the court to lay the ball up into the basket.

The Warriors kicked off the final quarter of the game with a layup out of the hands of Lexi Greffen.  Greffen continued the attack seconds later as she stepped beyond the arc and hit a three pointer.  A three pointer by Kimani Green pushed the Warriors lead to twenty points with six minutes left on the clock.  Brittany Mack passed the ball under the net to Allie Newberry who laid it up into the basket.  Amaya Richards laid the ball up to get the Flying Fleet back within twenty points.  However, back-to-back layups by Nyah Garner and Rachel Page allowed the Warriors to claim a 60-36 point victory.
 

 
 
What's Next

The Warriors will travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on the Converse Valkyries on February 11 at 2 p.m.  They will return home on February 15 to host the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 5 p.m.  Southern Wesleyan will wrap up their homestead as they host the Barton Bulldogs on February 18 for senior night.  They will then travel to Bristol, TN on February 22 to take on the King Tornado for the final regular season game of the year.
