Wingate Homers as Warriors Drop Road Contest to Wolves

Newberry, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped both games in the double header against the Newberry Wolves on Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors fell in 4-3 and 8-0 final scores.

The Warriors collected nine hits in game one.  Both Talissa Cannady and Autumn Barnhardt led the team with two hits.  Barnhardt doubled and Andi Grae Wingate hit a home run.  Wingate picked up two of the three RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked four times.  Ella Grace Lawton started the first game of the day and pitched three innings. 

Southern Wesleyan picked up three hits in the second game of the afternoon.  The Warriors walked six times with Autumn Barnhardt leading the team with three.  Talissa Cannady followed with two walks.  Emmy Copeland stole a base.  Andi Grae Wingate collected both of the strikeouts recorded by the pitching staff.

How It Happened

Game One
Newberry took the first runs of the afternoon as they brought two runners in to score in the bottom of the third inning.

Southern Wesleyan cut their lead in half in the top of the fourth.  Autumn Barnhardt led off with a double to left center.  A single by Madison Keefer allowed Barnhardt to advance to third base.  With one out, Kori Rominger hit a ground out to the pitcher that allowed Barnhardt to come in to score.

The Wolves continued to attack as they brought runs in to score in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings.

With one out in the top of the seventh inning, Ryanne Yarborough reached first on a walk.  Andi Grae Wingate then hit her first home run of the season to bring Yarborough in to score.  However, the Warriors fell to the Wolves in a 4-3 final in game one.
 

Game Two
Newberry shut the Warriors out in the second game of the afternoon, preventing them from getting a single run on the board.  The Wolves brought runs in in the third, fifth and sixth innings to win the game in an 8-0 final score.
 

 
 
What's Next

The Warriors will return home on February 9 as they host the Limestone Saints on Varsity Field and 2 and 4:30 p.m.  They will then compete in the Anderson University Tournament on February 10 and 11 where they will take on the Anderson Trojans and LeMoyne-Owen Magicians.  Southern Wesleyan will then take part in Georgia College's Tournament on February 17 and 18.
