Mack, Greffen Post Double Digits in Loss to Tornado

Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell to the King Tornado in the final regular season game of the year in a 62-51 final score on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors shot 35.7% from the field in the loss to the Tornado.  Brittany Mack led the team with 12 points.  Mack was followed by Lexi Greffen with 10 points and Tristen Berry with nine.  Southern Wesleyan picked up seven assists with both Berry and Allie Newberry recording two.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 36 total rebounds on the night.  Shelby Glance led the team with 10.  Glance went on to record the lone block of the game for Southern Wesleyan.  The Warriors stole the ball 11 times with both Lexi Greffen and Allie Newberry recording three steals apiece.

How It Happened

The Tornado took the first points of the game on a layup by Le'Aija Ellington, however the Warriors countered with a jump shot by Shelby Glance.  A second jump shot by Glance extended the Warriors lead to 6-2.  Lexi Greffen hit a jump shot and then Brittany Mack stepped beyond the arc to hit a three pointer.  King countered with a three pointer by Ellington.  However, Tristen Berry passed the ball under the basket to Lexi Greffen.  Greffen laid it up to put the Warriors ahead by eight points with just over four minutes left on the clock.  Jhayda McKinney and Jaelyn West hit back-to-back three point baskets.  However, a free throw by Brittany Mack kept the Warriors on top.

Allie Newberry kicked off the second quarter with a layup to extend the Warriors lead to three points.  However, a three pointer by Jhayda McKinney allowed King to tie the game up.  The Tornado pushed ahead on a three pointer by Jaden Potts.  The Warriors stayed within four points of the Tornado on a jump shot by Lexi GreffenKimani Green laid the ball up into the basket to cut the King lead down to two points.  King led 29-27 at halftime.

King kicked off the third quarter with a dunk by Ashley Allen.  However, a layup by Brittany Mack allowed the Warriors to stay within two.  Jaden Potts stepped beyond the arc to hit a three pointer for the Tornado.  Allie Newberry took the ball under the basket and laid it up.  King pushed on as Jada Campbell stole the ball and put up the jump shot on a fast break.  Back-to-back layups by Tristen Berry and Alexis Glover kept the Warriors within six points.

Le'Aija Ellington hit a three to kick off the final quarter for the Tornado.  Lexi Greffen stole the ball and took the ball down the court on a fast break before putting up a layup to put the Warriors down 48-41.  However, a jump shot by Ashley Allen put King back on top by nine.  A jump shot by Ellington gave King an eleven point lead.  It was short lived as Tristen Berry laid the ball up into the basket.  Allie Newberry passed the ball under the net to Alexis Glover who laid it up.  However, the Tornado went on to win the game in a 62-51 final score.
 
 
 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will take part in the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament this season for the first time in school histroy.  They will compete in the first round of the tournament on February 26.
