Southern Wesleyan Drops Double Header to Augusta

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped the double header against the Augusta Jaguars on Tuesday afternoon.  The Warriors dropped game one 5-4 and then game two 7-0.

Southern Wesleyan collected five hits in the first game.  Addi Johnson doubled, and Andi Grae Wingate hit her third home run of the season.  Wingate led the team with two of the four RBIs.  The Warriors walked three times and both Johnson and Jaelyn Montfort had stolen bases.  Wingate started on the mound and struck out three batters over seven innings pitched.

The Warriors picked up five hits in the second game.  Talissa Cannady led the team with three hits on the night.  Southern Wesleyan walked four times.  Emma Jo Wolfe started on the mound and pitched two innings.  Both Autumn Barnhardt and Jaelyn Montfort came in to pitch in relief for the Warriors.  Barnhardt led the team with two strikeouts.

How It Happened

Game One
The Jaguars took the first run of the game as a groundout by Poff allowed Roberts to come in and score to give them a 1-0 run lead.

The Warriors challenged back in the bottom of the third inning.  Ryanne Yarborough led off the inning with a walk.  Jaelyn Montfort came in to pinch run for Yarborough and stole second base.  Sarah Prater hit a deep single to center field to bring Montfort in to score and tie the game up 1-1.

A two run home run by Patterson put Augusta ahead in the top of the sixth inning.

Southern Wesleyan tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Addi Johnson led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base.  With two out and Johnson in scoring position, Andi Grae Wingate drilled the ball down the left field line over the wall for a home run to plate two runs for the Warriors and tie the game 3-3.

Augusta countered in the top of the seventh inning as two runs came in to score to put them ahead 5-4.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors challenged.  With one out, Charity Dennis walked.  A single by Ryanne Yarborough allowed Dennis to advance to second.  Addi Johnson doubled to right center to bring Dennis in to score.  Southern Wesleyan fell to Augusta in game one in a 5-4 final score.
 
 
Game Two
Augusta struck quickly as plated five runs in the top of the first inning, four coming off a grand slam by Poff.  They extended their lead to 7-0 on a home run by Roberts.  The Jaguars went on to win the game in a 7-0 final score.
 
 
 


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Greeneville, TN on February 25 to take on the Tusculum Pioneers at noon and 2 p.m.  They will then travel to Columbus, GA to take on the Columbus State Cougars on February 28.  The Warriors will remain on the road on March 9 as they travel to Young Harris, GA to take on the Young Harris Mountain Lions at 3 and 5 p.m.  Southern Wesleyan will open up Conference Carolinas action on the road as they take on the UNC Pembroke Braves on March 17 and then the Francis Marion Patriots on March 18.
