Mack, Glance, Greffen Post Double Digits as Warriors Challenge Braves on the Road

Pembroke, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell on the road to the UNC Pembroke Braves in a 64-52 final score on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors shot 33.9% from the field in the game with three Warriors posting double digits in scoring.  Brittany Mack led the team with 16 points.  She was followed by Shelby Glance with 13 and Lexi Greffen with 12.  Southern Wesleyan had seven assists with Allie Newberry leading the team with four. 

The Warriors pulled down 31 rebounds.  Junior Shelby Glance led the team with nine rebounds.  Both Allie Newberry and Alexis Glover followed with four.  Glance and Newberry each had two blocks.  Southern Wesleyan stole the ball five times with Brittany Mack and Lexi Greffen each picking up two.

How It Happened

The Braves attacked early as Courtney Smith put up a three point shot.  However, a three pointer out of the hands Tristen Berry allowed the Warriors to tie the game back up.  Kalaya Hall hit a three pointer for the Braves.  Southern Wesleyan would not be discouraged as Shelby Glance stepped beyond the arc and hit a three pointer.  Brittany Mack hit a three of her own to give the Warriors a 9-6 point advantage.  UNC Pembroke pushed ahead as Zaria Clark put up a jump shot to allow the Braves to regain the lead.  Glance fired off her second three of the evening to allow the Warriors to take a one point lead.  Lexi Greffen put up a jump shot.  A last second three pointer out of the hands of Caroline Reese allowed the Warriors to take a two point lead.

The Braves would not relent as a three pointer by Courtney Smith allowed UNC Pembroke to take the lead at the start of the second quarter.  UNC Pembroke continued their run as Alcenia Purnell and Hannah Russell each hit baskets.  Allie Newberry put up a jump shot.  The Braves continued to distance themselves from the Warriors.  However, Southern Wesleyan fought back as Shelby Glance and Lexi Greffen hit back-to-back two point shots to keep the Warriors within nine. The Braves led 32-23 at halftime.

Brittany Mack laid the ball up into the basket to kick off the third quarter for the Warriors.  However, UNC Pembroke countered with a three pointer by Kalaya Hall.  A jump shot by Shelby Glance allowed the Warriors to cut the Braves lead down to eight points.  Mack stepped beyond the arc and put up a three pointer to put the Warriors down 35-30.  However, a jump shot by Lillian Flantos allowed the Braves to push their lead back up to seven with just over six minutes left in the quarter.  The Braves would not relent as Courtney Smith hit another three point shot.  Southern Wesleyan would not go down without a fight as a last second three pointer by Allie Newberry kept the Warriors within nine points.

UNC Pembroke kicked off the final quarter of play with a three pointer out of the hands of Kelci Adams to extend their lead to 48-36.  The Warriors challenged back as Shelby Glance stepped beyond the arc and hit yet another three point basket.  Lexi Greffen took a pass from Shelby Glance and took the ball down the court for a layup to put the Warriors back within nine.  The Warriors pushed on as Brittany Mack took a step beyond the arc and hit a three to allow Southern Wesleyan to come to within four points of the Braves with just under seven minutes left in the game.  The Braves maintained the intensity as a jump shot by Zaria Clark put them back on top 57-46.  Despite last minute free throws by Lexi Greffen, the Warriors fell to the Braves in a 64-52 final score.
 

 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 4 as they travel to Franklin Springs, GA to take on the Emmanuel Lions at 2 p.m.  They will then return home on February 7 to host the Erskine Flying Fleet at 5 p.m.  The Warriors will travel to Spartanburg, SC on February 11 to take on the Converse Valkyries.
