Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Warriors Past Crusaders

Tigerville, SC – Southern Wesleyan completed the season sweep of the North Greenville Crusaders on Tuesday evening as they defeated them in a 52-33 final score.

The Warriors shot 34.4% from the field and were 50% from the free throw line.  Shelby Glance led the team with 22 points.  Glance was followed by Tristen Berry with nine points and Brittany Mack with eight.  The Warriors collected 11 assists with Berry picking up seven of them.

Southern Wesleyan pulled down 49 rebounds during the game.  Shelby Glance recorded 11 boards herself to give her yet another double-double game on the season.  Behind her both Brittany Mack and Allie Newberry had six rebounds.  Glance recorded five of the seven blocks of the evening.  The Warriors stole the ball nine times in the game with Brooke Henricks leading the team with four.  Both Glance and Mack had two steals on the night.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan took the first points of the game as Tristen Berry laid the ball up into the basket.  A layup by Brittany Mack shortly afterwards allowed the Warriors to extend their lead to four.  North Greenville countered on a layup by Tabitha Littlefield, and then a jump shot by Aniecia Malone put them within two points.  Lexi Greffen collected a defensive rebound and passed it down the court to Tristen Berry who laid it up into the basket on a fast break.

The Warriors continued to press in the second quarter as Shelby Glance put up a jump shot to put them ahead 10-7.  North Greenville countered with a jump shot by Jayda Glass to put them back within one point.  The Crusaders pushed on as a jump shot by Aniecia Malone allowed them to take the lead.  The Warriors tied it up on a free throw by Tristen Berry.  However, a jump shot by Glass allowed the Crusaders to lead 15-13 at halftime.

North Greenville extended their lead to 17-13 on a free throws by Angie Rodriguez to kick off the third quarter.  Allie Newberry collected a pass from Tristen Berry and put up a jump shot to tie the game up at seventeen points apiece.  However, a three pointer by Abi Oates allowed the Crusaders to regain the lead.  Shelby Glance laid the ball up into the basket to put the Warriors back within one point.  The Warriors continued to push as back-to-back baskets by Glance allowed Southern Wesleyan to take the lead.  Glance stepped beyond the arc and hit a three pointer to extend the Warriors lead to 26-22 with just under four minutes on the clock.  North Greenville came back within three points as Abbie Bishop put up a three pointer.

Tristen Berry kicked off the fourth quarter with a jump shot.  Southern Wesleyan pushed further ahead on a jump shot by Shelby Glance.  Glance hit a three pointer and then a jump shot by Lexi Greffen allowed the Warriors to extend their lead to nine points with just over seven minutes left in the quarter.  Southern Wesleyan maintained their intensity as a layup by Greffen put them up 39-28.  North Greenville came back to within ten points on a jump shot by Jayda Glass.  However, a jump shot by Tristen Berry put the Warriors right back ahead by twelve.  Shelby Glance knocked down her fourth three point shot of the evening.  Brooke Henricks stole the ball away and passed it down to Brittany Mack who laid it up to give the Warriors a 52-33 point victory.

 
 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 1 as they travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves at 5 p.m.  They will then travel to Franklin Springs, GA on February 4 to take on the Emmanuel Lions.  The Warriors will return home on February 7 to host the Erskine Flying Fleet.
