Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan took down the University of Mount Olive Trojans in a thrilling 69-56 upset victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors shot 48.1% from the field and went 42.9% from beyond the arc in their third conference victory of the season.
Allie Newberry led the team with 19 points. She was followed by
Shelby Glance with 13 and
Tristen Berry with 10. Newberry continued to lead the Warriors with seven of the 21 assists in the game.
Lexi Greffen followed with five assists.
Southern Wesleyan pulled down 38 rebounds with
Tristen Berry leading the team with nine.
Shelby Glance picked up seven rebounds. Both Glance and
Lexi Greffen had blocks. The Warriors stole the ball 11 times with
Brittany Mack leading the team with four.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan broke out early as
Lexi Greffen hit a jump shot. However, a layup by Laila Harris allowed the Trojans to tie the game back up. Greffen hit a second shot to regain the Warriors lead. Mount Olive broke away as layups by Reagan Hune and Harris gave them an 8-4 point lead. However,
Shelby Glance laid the ball up to tie the game back up. Glance stepped beyond the arc and fired off a three point shot of a pass from Greffen to give the Warriors a 13-10 point lead. Mount Olive would not go down quietly as Hune hit a jump shot to put them back on top by one.
Mount Olive continued their attacks in the second quarter as Laila Harris put up a jump shot. The Warriors fought back as a three pointer by
Caroline Reese allowed Southern Wesleyan to regain the lead. The lead was short lived as back-to-back layups allowed the Trojans to take a two point lead.
Brittany Mack passed the ball under the net to
Allie Newberry who laid it up to put the Warriors on top again. Baskets by
Brooke Henricks and Newberry allowed Southern Wesleyan to extend their lead to 28-22 with just over four minutes left on the clock. Mount Olive challenged right back as a jump shot by Laila Anderson allowed them to tie the game up 32-32 at halftime.
The Trojans kicked off the third quarter with a layup by Laila Anderson to put them ahead by two points.
Tristen Berry collected a pass from
Allie Newberry and stepped beyond the arc to sink a three to give the Warriors the lead. A three pointer out of the hands of
Brooke Henricks then extended the Warriors lead to four. Southern Wesleyan distanced themselves further as three point baskets by Berry and Newberry extended their lead to ten. Raegan Hune took the ball to the net for a layup for the Trojans.
Caroline Reese stepped beyond the arc and drilled her second three point shot of the night with just under a minute on the clock.
Trailing by thirteen to open up the final quarter, the Trojans attacked first on a layup by Maleiya Hill. A three pointer by Laila Anderson cut the Warriors lead down to six. However, Southern Wesleyan pushed right back as
Shelby Glance stepped beyond the arc to hit a three pointer. A second three by Glance gave the Warriors a 59-47 point lead with just under five minutes on the clock. Reagan Hune stole the ball away and passed it down the court to Laila Anderson, who laid it up to put the Trojans back within seven. However,
Brittany Mack and
Tristen Berry hit back-to-back layups to put the Warriors back ahead by eleven.
Brittany Mack hit a jump shot with just twenty seconds on the clock to give the Warriors a 69-56 point victory.
What's Next
Southern Wesleyan will travel for the next three games. They will go down the road to Tigerville, SC on January 24 to take on the North Greenville Crusaders at 5 p.m. The Warriors will then travel to Pembroke, NC to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves at 5 p.m. They will remain on the road on February 4 to take on the Emmanuel Lions at 2 p.m.
