Southern Wesleyan Falls to Belmont Abbey

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a 23-1 final score on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors took seven shots and three shot on goal in the loss to the Crusaders.  Ansley Burroughs had the lone goal for the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan won six draw controls with Tabitha Beecher leading the team with four.  The Warriors caused twelve turnover with both Haylee Cureton and Jesse Soles causing three turnovers.  Kaeleigh McDaniel played all sixty minutes in goal and recorded seven saves.

How It Happened

Belmont Abbey came out strong in the first quarter as Emma Pherson scored within the first minute of the game.  Southern Wesleyan countered as Yael Echeverria took shots on goal, but Michelle Guppy saved the ball from reaching the back of the cage.  The Crusaders maintained the attack as they scored seven more times so they led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Riley D'Andrea scored the first goal of the second quarter to put the Crusaders ahead 9-0.  Southern Wesleyan challenged back with a shot by Tabitha Beecher, but Beecher's attack was thwarted by Guppy to keep the Warriors off the board.  Sophia Colantuno scored the tenth goal of the game for the Crusaders.  The Warriors continued to challenge with shots by Jesse Soles, but the Crusader defense stayed strong to keep Southern Wesleyan off the board.  Southern Wesleyan continued to fight as Ansley Burroughs got around the Belmont Abbey defense and put the ball into the cage to put the Warriors down 13-1 at the end of the first half.

Belmont Abbey would not relent as Jenn Smith and Olivia Carlino scored back-to-back goals to kick-off the third quarter.  They continued to push ahead taking a 17-1 goal lead with just over six minutes left on the third quarter on a goal by Mackenzie Kaderabek.  The Warriors countered with shots by Tabitha Beecher, but her shots were not able to meet the goal.

The Crusaders kicked off the final quarter with their twentieth goal of the game as Angela Bagatta put the ball into the back of the cage.  Belmont Abbey continued to counter the Warriors attacks and push further ahead.  The Crusaders went on to win the game in a 23-1 final score.

 
 
What's Next

The Warriors will travel to Greenwood, SC to take on the Lander Bearcats on April 13 at 4 p.m.  They will then wrap up the regular season in Tigerville, SC as they take on the North Greenville Crusaders on April 21 at 5:30 p.m.
