Warriors Drop Non-Conference Game to Bearcats

Greenwood, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in non-conference play to the Lander Bearcats in a 21-4 final score.

The Warriors took 10 shots in the loss to the Bearcats with nine of the shots being on goal.  Tabitha Beecher led the team with five shots on goal.  Kelsey Hawkins had two of the four goals of the day with both Sasha Schoenborn and Tabitha Beecher recording solo goals.  Both Beecher and Isabelle Starbird had assists.  Southern Wesleyan caused seven turnovers during the game.  Schoenborn collected four of the 12 ground balls of the day.  Kaeleigh McDaniel played all sixty minutes in goal and had five saves.

How It Happened

The Bearcats struck early as Emma Arifin scored the first goal of the game just a minute into the game.  Lander would not relent as both Emmy Peterson and Alyssa Suchan took shots, but Kaeleigh McDaniel and the Warriors defense saved the ball for the back of the cage.  The Bearcats continued to push ahead as they attacked the cage several more times to take a 10-0 goal lead at the end of the first quarter.

Southern Wesleyan continued to put up a fight as Tabitha Beecher collected a pass from Isabelle Starbird and put the ball into the back of the cage to put the Warriors down 10-1.  The Warriors continued attack as Beecher took another shot on the goal, but Taryn Samons saved the attack from paying off.  Lander pushed ahead as they scored three more times before Southern Wesleyan was able to counter their attack.  Kelsey Hawkins collected a pass from Beecher and put it into the cage for the second Warriors goal.  A foul within the eight meter allowed Sasha Schoenborn to score her career first goal to put the Warriors behind the Bearcats 13-3 at the half.

Lander continued to push ahead of the Warriors as they took an eleven goal lead on a shot by Alyssa Suchan.  Yael Echeverria took a shot on the goal for the Warriors, but Kara Krusbe saved the attack from cutting into their lead.  The Warriors continued to challenge, but all thier attacks were thwarted until a foul in the eight meter allowed Kelsey Hawkins to score a free position goal to put the Warriors down 16-4.

The Bearcats continued to distance themselves as Mary Claire Robinson scored to put Lander on top 18-4 just a minute into the final quarter.  Tabitha Beecher took several more shots on goal to attempt to cut into Lander's lead.  However, Kara Krusbe and the Bearcats would not let the Warriors challenges pay off.  Lander went on to win the game in a 21-4 final score.
 
 

 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will wrap up the regular season on April 21 as they travel to Tigerville, SC to take on the North Greenville Crusaders at 5:30 p.m.
