Warriors Unable to Hold onto Early Lead Against Patriots

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan was unable to hold onto their early lead in the first game of the series against Francis Marion on Friday evening as they fell in a 13-6 final score.

The Warriors recorded 14 hits in the first game in the series.  Both Will Pitts and Josh Galloway recorded four hits in the game.  Southern Wesleyan walked five times and both Caden Cotton and Clifton Olmstead stole bases.  Beau Shaw started game one and pitched 4.2 innings while striking out three batters.  Jacob Standridge, Ryan Moore and Andrew Patterson all came in to pitch in relief.

How It Happened

The Patriots took the first run of the game as a triple by Gonzalez allowed Mattox to score to give Francis Marion the early 1-0 advantage.

The Warriors countered in the bottom of the first inning.  Will Pitts led off with a single through the left side.  Pitts advanced to second on a walk to Chance FogelJosh Galloway singled to center field to load up the bases.  With one out and the bases loaded, Caden Cotton reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Pitts to come in to score and tie up the game.

Southern Wesleyan maintained the pressure in the bottom of the second inning.  Ty King Richards led off with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a single by Clifton OlmsteadDJ Ludwick flew out to advance King Richards to third bases.  Sean Sutay put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Olmstead to second and put both runners in scoring position.  A walk to Will Pitts then loaded up the bases.  With the bases loaded, Chance Fogel walked to bring Ty King Richards in to score.  A single by Josh Galloway allowed Olmstead to come in to put the Warriors on top 3-1.

The Warriors were not done as they scored again in the bottom of the third.  Zach O'Malley led off the inning with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a ground out by Caden Cotton.  With one out and O'Malley on second, Ty King Richards singled down the left field line to allow O'Malley to reach third.  Clifton Olmstead singled to center field to bring O'Malley in to score.  Olmstead then went on to steal second base.  With two outs, DJ Ludwick singled up the middle to bring Olmstead home.

Francis Marion challenged in the top of the fifth inning as they brought two runs in to score to put them down 5-3.

The Warriors scored their final runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Will Pitts led off the inning with a single to right field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With one out, Josh Galloway singled through the right side to move Pitts to third base.  A sacrifice fly out by Zach O'Malley allowed Pitts to come in and score and put the Warriors lead at 6-3.

The Patriots went on to bring runs in to score in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to win the opening game of the series in a 13-6 final score.
 
 
 
What's Next

The Warriors will wrap up the series against the Francis Marion Patriots on April 2.  Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on April 5 to host the Anderson Trojans.  They will then travel to Charlotte, NC on April 8 to take on the Queens Royals.
