Late Challenge Not Enough to Push Warriors Past Hawks

Murfreesboro, NC – Southern Wesleyan challenged late in the game against the Chowan Hawks, but fell in a 10-8 final score.

The Warriors collected 11 hits during the game with Will Pitts leading the team with three.  Both Jordan Montgomery and Ty King Richards followed with two hits in the game.  Josh Asbill picked up an extra base hit with a double.  Pitts recorded three of the eight RBIs.  Southern Wesleyan walked nine times and both Chance Fogel and Zach O'Malley stole bases.

Jacob Standridge started the first game of the series against the Hawks on the mound.  Standridge pitched 3.2 innings while striking out one batter.  Ryan Moore came in to pitch in relief and also struck out one.

How It Happened

The Warriors took the first run of the game in the top of the third inning.  Josh Asbill led off with a double to right center.  With Asbill in scoring position, Will Pitts singled to right center to bring Asbill home and give Southern Wesleyan a 1-0 run lead.

However, the lead was short lived as the Hawks plated four runs in the bottom of the third inning to put them ahead 4-1.

Southern Wesleyan challenged once more in the top of the fourth inning.  Jordan Montgomery led off with a single to right field.  However, Ty King Richards hit into a fielder's choice that took Montgomery off second base.  Sean Sutay singled through the left side to advance King Richards to second base.  Both King Richards and Sutay advanced a base on a fly out by Clifton OlmsteadJosh Asbill then walked to load up the bases.  With two outs and the bases loaded, Will Pitts singled to left field to bring both Sutay and King Richards in to score and put Southern Wesleyan down one run to Chowan.

Chowan pushed further ahead with runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings.

The Warriors challenged in the top of the ninth.  Will Pitts led off with a single up the middle and then advanced to second on a walk to Chance FogelJosh Galloway walked to load up the bases and bring Zach O'Malley up to bat.  O'Malley knocked the ball up the middle for a single that brought Pitts in to score.  With the bases loaded, Jordan Montgomery was hit by a pitch to bring Fogel home and cut the Hawks lead in half.  Ty King Richards singled through the left side to allow Galloway to come in and score.  With one out and the bases loaded, Clifton Olmstead walked to allow Montgomery to come in and score.  Dawson Gilstrap came in to pinch hit for Josh Asbill and then walked to bring in the Warriors final run of the game.  Despite the late inning rally, the Hawks took the first game in a 10-8 final score.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will wrap up the series against the Chowan Hawks on March 26 at noon and 3 p.m.  The Warriors will then travel to Toccoa Falls, GA on March 29 to take on the Toccoa Falls Screaming Eagles at 1 and 3 p.m.  They will then return to Dr. C Keith Connor Field on April 1 and 2 to host the Francis Marion Patriots in Conference Carolinas action.
