Warriors Fall on the Road to Bulldogs

Wilson, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Barton Bulldogs in a 77-57 final on Friday evening.
 
The Warriors shot 39.1% from the field in the loss to the Bulldogs.  Brittany Mack led the team with 13 points while Nakia Hooks following with 10.  Southern Wesleyan had 14 assists with Mack leading the team with four.
 
Defensively, the Warriors had 39 rebounds.  Kayla Garrett collected eight while Brooke Henricks followed with seven.  Garrett recorded two of the four blocks.  Both Lonesha Lee and Caroline Reese also had blocks in the game.  Brittany Mack had three of the seven steals.

How It Happened
 
The Bulldogs took the first points of the game on a driving layup by Aniyah Jones, but a jump shot out of the hands of Nakia Hooks allowed the Warriors to tie the game up 2-2.  A layup by Brittany Mack kept the game tied up at four points apiece.  A layup by Lonesha Lee put the Warriors on top by two, but Michelle Gainey laid the ball up to allow the Bulldogs to tie the game up once again.  Southern Wesleyan took the lead on a layup by Brittany Mack, but Barton regained the lead as Jami Tham laid the ball up into the basket.  Nakia Hooks laid the ball up, but the Warriors trailed the Bulldogs 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second quarter as Tristen Berry made a free throw, but a jump shot by Jami Tham allowed the Bulldogs to push their lead to 21-15.  Barton continued to push ahead on baskets by Shanika Peterkin.  The Warriors cut the Bulldogs lead to six as Sasha Schoenborn took a pass from Lonesha Lee and stepped beyond the arc to sink a three point shot.  Kaliyah Gladney put the ball into the net for the Bulldogs, but the Warriors countered with a jump shot by Kayla GarrettNakia Hooks drove the ball to the net and laid it up to cut the Bulldogs lead down to 32-25.  Brittany Mack laid the ball into the basket to put the Warriors down 36-29 at the half.
 
Barton struck first in the third quarter on a layup by Shanika Peterkin, but Southern Wesleyan countered on a layup by Tristen Berry.  The Warriors continued to challenge as a layup by Nakia Hooks allowed Southern Wesleyan to come within seven.  Barton continued to push ahead as a layup by Jami Tham put them on top 50-35.  Allie Newberry made a jump shot off a pass from Kayla Garrett to put the Warriors down eighteen points.
 
Tristen Berry laid the ball up early in the fourth quarter to put the Warriors within twenty.  They continued to challenge on a driving layup by Brittany Mack.  The Warriors continued to chip away with layups by Mack and Kayla Garrett.  However, back-to-back layups by Shanika Peterkin extended the Bulldogs' lead to 69-49.  Barton continued to push their lead ahead on baskets by Kayla Byrne and Jada Battle.  Despite a late free throw by Brittany Mack, the Warriors fell to the Bulldogs 77-57.
 
 
 
What's Next
 
Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 5 as they travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on February 8 to host the King Tornado.  They will then host the Bob Jones Bruins on February 9 at 5.
