How It Happened
The Trojans of Mount Olive charged out of the game, taking an early 6-0 lead on baskets by Sherry Johnson, Ivanda Hudjakova and Laila Harris. Southern Wesleyan came within four of the Trojans on free throws by
Nakia Hooks. Mount Olive continued to push ahead, taking a 15-4 point lead on a three point shot by Makayla Kimble. A layup by
Brittany Mack allowed the Warriors to come within ten points.
Tristen Berry sunk a late jump shot to put the Warriors down 24-14 to the Trojans.
Southern Wesleyan took the first points of the second quarter on a free throw by
Nakia Hooks. However, the Trojans continued to distance themselves as Haleigh Crews raced down the court and laid the ball up to give them an eleven point lead. With just over six minutes left in the quarter,
Tristen Berry laid the ball up in the paint to make the score 31-17. Despite a late layup by
Kayla Garrett, the Warriors trailed the Trojans by seventeen points at half.
The Warriors continued to fight as
Tristen Berry and
Brittany Mack each made layups. Mount Olive would not let up their attacks, but Southern Wesleyan countered with a layup by
Nakia Hooks. Layups by Ivanda Hudjakova and Makayla Kimble extended the Trojans lead to 55-36. Despite a jumper by Mack, the Trojans continued to push ahead of the Warriors.
Southern Wesleyan took the first points of the fourth quarter on a jump by
Brooke Henricks. A three pointer by
Sasha Schoenborn put the Warriors down twenty-three points. Mount Olive continued to push ahead as Hudjakova made a three point shot. The Trojans took a 31-point advantage off a three pointer by Azariah Fields. Despite a late layup by
Brooke Henricks, the Warriors fell to the Trojans 80-55.
What's Next
Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on February 8 as they host the King Tornado at 5:30 p.m. They will then host the Bob Jones Bruins on February 9 at 5 p.m. The Warriors will then travel to Pembroke, NC on February 11 to take on the UNC Pembroke Braves. They will remain on the road on February 12 to take on the Chowan Hawks.
