Southern Wesleyan Unable to Pass UNC Pembroke at Home

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the UNC Pembroke Braves on Friday evening in a 69-51 final score.
 
The Warriors shot 20.7% from the field.  Nakia Hooks led the team with 14 points.  She was followed by Brittany Mack with 10 points.  Southern Wesleyan had eight assists with Hooks leading the team with three.  Defensively, Southern Wesleyan had 34 rebounds with Hooks leading the team with nine.  She was followed by Brittany Mack and Shelby Glance with seven rebounds each.  Southern Wesleyan had four steals during the game.

How It Happened
 
The Braves took the first points of the game on layups by Tiara Williams and Gabby Smith.  Southern Wesleyan came within seven on a three point shot by Shelby Glance.  A three point shot by Allie Newberry put Southern Wesleyan down 11-7.  The Braves pushed ahead, but a three point basket by Sasha Schoenborn allowed Southern Wesleyan to stay within five points of UNC Pembroke.
 
UNC Pembroke was not discouraged as Courtney Smith and Zaria Clark made baskets to extend the Braves lead to 22-11.  Brittany Mack stepped beyond the arc to sink a three point shot.  Southern Wesleyan continued to chip away with a second three pointer by Shelby Glance.  With just over three minutes left, Brooke Henricks laid the ball up into the basket.  The Braves were not discouraged as baskets by Clark and Smith put them ahead 38-21.
 
The Braves took a twenty point lead on a layup by Lillian Glantos.  Southern Wesleyan stayed within eighteen points of the Braves on free throws by Lonesha Lee and Nakia Hooks.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Braves lead on a layup by Hooks and jump shot by Lee.  A three point shot by Alencia Purnell allowed UNC Pembroke to take a twenty point lead.
 
UNC Pembroke regained their twenty point lead on a three pointer by Alcenia Purnell.  Layups by Nakia Hooks put Southern Wesleyan within sixteen points.  The Warriors came closer to the Braves on a three point shot by Brittany Mack.  However a jump shot by Flantos and free throws by Courtney Smith allowed the Braves to take a seventeen point lead with just over four minute to play.  UNC Pembroke went on to win the game 69-51.
 
 
 
What's Next
 
Southern Wesleyan will host the Converse Valkyries on February 19 at 2 p.m.  They will then travel to Banner Elk, NC on February 21 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 5 p.m.  The Warriors will host the Erskine Flying Fleet on February 22 before traveling to Belmont, NC to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at on February 24.
