Southern Wesleyan Drops Game to Mount Olive

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Monday afternoon in a 72-43 final score.
 
The Warriors shot 28.8% from the field in the loss to the Trojans.  Lonesha Lee and Brooke Henricks led the team with nine points each.  Southern Wesleyan collected eight assists during the game.  Brittany Mack had two of the five steals.  Defensively, the Warriors collected 31 rebounds with Mack leading the team with eight.  Both Allie Newberry and Caroline Reese had blocks in the game.

How It Happened
 
The Warriors took the first points of the game on a layup by Brooke Henricks, however a layup by Ivanda Hudjakova allowed the Trojans to tie the game up.  Southern Wesleyan pushed ahead with baskets by Nakia Hooks and Lonesha Lee.  Mount Olive was not discouraged as three point shots by Ayonna Cotton put them ahead 10-8 halfway through the first quarter.  Kayla Garrett passed the ball over to Sasha Schoenborn who took a shot from beyond the arc to keep the Warriors within two.  Seconds later, Garrett laid the ball up to tie the game.  A three pointer by Tristen Berry put the Warriors back on top, but Mount Olive countered with a three pointer of their own out of the hands of Makayla Kimble to give them an 18-16 point lead.
 
Ivanda Hudjakova kicked off the second quarter for the Trojans with a layup to extend their lead to four points.  The Warriors challenged back as Caroline Reese made a three point shot.  Mount Olive continued to push ahead with a three by Hudjakova.  The Trojans blocked every attack the Warriors made keeping them off the board until a layup by Kayla Garrett put the Warriors within twelve with just over two minutes left.  The Trojans went on to lead 43-25 at halftime.
 
Mount Olive extended their lead to twenty points with free throws by Ivanda Hudjakova.  Lonesha Lee laid the ball up in the paint to allow the Warriors to come to 47-27 behind the Trojans.  Layups by Hudjakova and Ayonna Cotton allowed the Trojans to extend their lead to twenty-three points with just over seven minutes left.  Mount Olive continued to push ahead before a layup by Allie Newberry allowed Southern Wesleyan to cut into their lead.
 
The Warriors took the first points of the final quarter on a layup by Nakia Hooks.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge as Lonesha Lee laid the ball up in the paint to put the Warriors twenty-six behind the Trojans.  However, a layup by Kaia Simpson allowed Mount Olive to take a 66-36 point lead.  Tristen Berry laid the ball up to keep the Warriors within thirty of the Trojans.  Mount Olive went on to win the game 72-43.
 
 
 
What's Next
 
The Warriors will remain at home on February 16 as they host the Emmanuel Lions at 5:30.  They will then host the UNC Pembroke Braves on February 18 at 5 and the Converse Valkyries on February 19 at 2 p.m.  Southern Wesleyan will then travel to Banner Elk, NC on February 21 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats.
