Southern Wesleyan Falls on the Road to Catawba

Salisbury, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Catawba Indians on Saturday afternoon in a 10-3 final score.
 
The Warriors recorded 13 shots and 11 shots on goal in the loss to the Indians.  Tabitha Beecher led the team with eight shots and six shots on goal.  Beecher along with Jocelyn Cosgrove and Madison Brugger collected goals during the game.  The lone assist from the Warriors came from Kelsey Hawkins.  Southern Wesleyan had 18 ground balls with Hawkins leading the team with four.  Jairy Sandoval had four of the eight draw controls the Warriors won.  Southern Wesleyan caused 12 turnovers during the game.  Kaeleigh McDaniel played all sixty minutes in goal for the Warriors and collected 10 saves.

How It Happened
 
Southern Wesleyan attacked the cage early as Kelsey Hawkins passed the ball over to Jocelyn Cosgrove who put it into the cage to give the Warriors a 1-0 advantage.  Catawba countered as Colleen Green scored to tie the game up.  The Indians continued to challenge the Warriors defense, but their attacks went high or hit the post.  Catawba took the lead on a goal by Mercedez Boucicaut.
 
The Warriors continued to challenge as Tabitha Beecher took a shot on the goal, but Aryn Dorr saved the attack to keep Southern Wesleyan from taking the lead.  Colleen Green attempted to extend the Indians' lead, but Kaeleigh McDaniel saved the attack to keep Catawba from extending their lead.
 
Catawba picked up the intensity of their attacks as Ella McCusker scored their third goal of the game.  Southern Wesleyan countered with an attack by Tabitha Beecher, but her attack was blocked from meeting the cage.  The Indians went on to score three more times in the third quarter to extend their lead to 6-1.
 
The Indians took a six goal lead on a goal by Mercedez Boucicaut.  Southern Wesleyan challenged back as Yael Echeverria took a free position shot, but Aryn Dorr saved the ball from the cage.  They continued to attack as Tabitha Beecher collected the ball and put it in the goal to put the Warriors within five of the Indians.  Back-to-back goals by Ella McCusker and Mercedez Boucicaut gave the Indians a 9-2 goal advantage.  Despite a late goal by Madison Brugger, the Warriors fell to the Indians 10-3.
 
 
 
 
What's Next
 
Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 18 as they travel to Young Harris, GA to take on the Young Harris Mountain Lions at 4 p.m.  They will then return to Childs Field on February 22 to host the Truett-McConnell Bears at 5 p.m.  The Warriors will then travel to Newberry, SC on February 25 to take on the Newberry Wolves at 4 p.m.
