Third Quarter Surge Propels Warriors Past Flying Fleet

Due West, SC – Southern Wesleyan picked up their first Conference Carolinas victory of the season on Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Erskine Flying Fleet in a 76-67 final score.

The Warriors shot 52% from the field and were 48% from beyond the arc in their victory over the Flying Fleet.  They went 8-9 from beyond the three point line in the third quarter to distance themselves from the Fleet.  Shelby Glance led the team with 22 points, including six three pointers.  She was followed by Brittany Mack with 14 points and Brooke Henricks with 10 points.  Southern Wesleyan had 17 assists during the game with Tristen Berry leading the team with eight.

Southern Wesleyan collected 31 rebounds.  Shelby Glance led the team with 14 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double game of the week.  The Warriors picked up 10 steals with Brittany Mack leading the team with three.  She was followed by Brooke Henricks with two.

How It Happened

The Warriors kicked off the game as Brittany Mack put up a three point jump shot.  However, the Flying Fleet tied it right up on a three pointer out of the hands of Alexis Burce.  Tristen Berry passed the ball over to Allie Newberry who laid the ball into the basket.  Erskine took a two point lead on back-to-back three point shots by Janelle Carter and Anzya Cook.  Southern Wesleyan fought back as a three point shot by Shelby Glance allowed the Warriors to come back to within four points.  Caroline Reese put in her first three point shot of the night and then a driving layup by Glance allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 14-13 point lead over Erskine.

The Flying Fleet regained their four point advantage in the second quarter as Anzya Cook laid the ball up into the basket.  However, the Warriors quickly countered on a layup by Alexis GloverTristen Berry put up a jump shot.  With just under six minutes left in the second quarter, Shelby Glance collected a pass from Berry and stepped beyond the arc to make a three pointer.  Erskine regained their four point lead on a layup by Albany Wilson.  Caroline Reese put up a jump shot to put the Warriors down by five.  Southern Wesleyan continued to fight as Brooke Henricks stole the ball away and got the ball to Brittany Mack who laid it up into the basket.  Once again the Warriors stole the ball.  Brittany Mack passed the ball over to Brooke Henricks who drove the ball up for a layup.  Henricks was fouled in the process to bring her to the free throw line.  She made the basket to allow the Warriors to tie the game up at thirty-one points apiece.  Nyah Garner stole the ball away from Alexis Burce and drove down the court.  She laid the ball up into the basket to give the Warriors a 37-31 point lead at the half.

Southern Wesleyan pushed further ahead in the third quarter as Shelby Glance made back-to-back three point shots to give the Warriors a ten point advantage.  With just over seven minutes left in the quarter, Glance knocked down a third three to push Southern Wesleyan's lead to 46-33.  Erskine countered with a three pointer of their own out of the hands of Janelle Carter.  Brooke Henricks passed the ball beyond the arc to Shelby Glance, who put down her sixth three point shot of the night to give the Warriors a 15-point lead with just over four minutes left.  Southern Wesleyan continued to push as Brittany Mack and Allie Newberry each sunk three pointers.  With just under two minutes left in the third quarter, Tristen Berry stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three point shot to give the Warriors a 62-41 point advantage.  Brittany Mack drilled a last second three pointer for the Warriors to wrap up the third quarter.

Erskine took the first points of the fourth quarter on made free throws by Anzya Cook.  However, Brooke Henricks countered with a layup for the Warriors.  Shanece Mitchell drove the ball up into the basket for a layup for the Flying Fleet.  Erskine countered once again as Mariah Corry sunk a three point to put them twenty points behind the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan continued to push as Shelby Glance collected an offensive rebound and then put it right back up into the basket for the Warriors.  Alexis Glover put up two layups for the Warriors to extend their lead to 74-54.  Mariah Corry put down her second three point shot of the afternoon to allow the Flying Fleet to come to within fifteen points.  Erskine fought back as a layup by Janelle Carter put them within eight.  However, Brooke Henricks laid the ball up into the basket to give the Warriors a 76-67 final score conference victory.
 
 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return home on December 7 as they host the Emmanuel Lions in Historic Tysinger Gymnasium at 5 p.m.  They will then host the North Greenville Crusaders on December 10 at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will welcome the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters to Central, SC on December 14 at 5 p.m.
