Warriors Challenge Bearcats in Non-Conference Action

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan challenged the Lander Bearcats in non-conference action on Monday evening before falling in an 88-78 final score.

The Warriors shot 48.1% from the field and were 61.1% from beyond the arc on Monday evening.  Tyrin Hollis led the Warriors with 23 points.  He was followed by Marcus Long (19 points) Jamal Edmonson (14 points) and Bryson Felder (11 points).  Hollis went on to lead the Warriors in assists with six.  He was followed by both Edmonson and Felder with three.

Southern Wesleyan collected 25 rebounds with Jamal Edmonson leading the team with seven.  Both Tyrin Hollis and Bryson Felder followed with six.  The Warriors posted five steals.

How It Happened

Lander took the first points of the game on a free throw by Ajang Aguek and then a three pointer by Jaylon Pugh.  Southern Wesleyan countered as Marcus Long laid the ball up into the basket.  A layup by Tyrin Hollis allowed the Warriors to tie the game up.  They took the lead on a layup in the paint by Jamal EdmonsonGriffin Effenberger passed the ball over to Bryson Felder who stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three point shot to extend the Warriors lead to 13-8.  A layup by Noah Dunn put the Bearcats back within three, but Edmonson laid the ball up into the basket to regain the Warriors five point advantage.  With under ten minutes on the clock, Tyrin Hollis put up a three pointer to put Southern Wesleyan ahead 20-13.  Lander chipped away at the Warriors lead with back-to-back jump shots by Jaylon Pugh.  Effenberger hit his first three point shot of the evening.  A three point shot by Chandler Lindsey put the Bearcats down one point, but Bryson Felder laid the ball into the basket quickly afterwards to push the Warriors lead back to five.  Noah Dunn stepped beyond the arc for a three to give the Bearcats a one point advantage.  The lead was short lived as Jamal Edmonson laid the ball up into the basket once again to put the Warriors on top 39-38 at halftime.

Lander kicked off the second half with a layup by Chandler Lindsey.  However, a steal and then layup by Marcus Long allowed the Warriors to regain their one point lead.  Noah Dunn tied the game up 42-42 on a layup in the paint.  The Warriors continued their attacks as Bryson Felder sunk a three point shot to put Southern Wesleyan back in the lead.  Jared Sherfield made a three point shot to give the Bearcats a 51-49 point advantage with just over thirteen minutes on the clock.  However, a three pointer by Jamal Edmonson put Southern Wesleyan back within one.  Edmonson stole the ball away from the Bearcats and sent it down the court to Raevon Allen who laid it up into the basket.  Tyrin Hollis hit another three point shot for the Warriors.  Lander pushed ahead, but Southern Wesleyan was no discouraged as Marcus Long and Hollis each hit three point baskets.  Back-to-back layups by Jamal Edmonson and Griffin Effenberger allowed the Warriors to tie the game back up 69-69 with just over five minutes left on the clock.  However, a layup by Jacob Cooper allowed the Bearcats to take a 73-69 point lead.  Despite last minute three point shots by Marcus Long and Tyrin Hollis, the Warriors fell to the Bearcats in an 88-78 final score.
 
 

 
What's Next

The Warriors will return to the court on December 30 as they host the Anderson Trojans in Historic Tysinger Gymnasium at 12 p.m.  They will then resume Conference Carolinas action on January 4 as they travel to Mount Olive, North Carolina to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 7 p.m.  They will then host the UNC Pembroke Braves on January 7 at 4 p.m.
