Southern Wesleyan Challenges Tusculum on the Road

Greeneville, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Tusculum Pioneers on Saturday afternoon in a 65-59 final score.

The Warriors shot 39% from the field and were 100% from the free throw line in the game.  Brittany Mack led the team with 17 points.  Mack was followed by Brooke Henricks with 13 and Allie Newberry with 12 points.  Tristen Berry picked up six of the 14 assists.

Southern Wesleyan collected 27 rebounds.  Alexis Glover led the team with six rebounds.  Both Shelby Glance and Tristen Berry followed with five.  Allie Newberry had the lone block.  The Warriors stole the ball eight times throughout the game with both Brittany Mack and Berry leading the team with two steals apiece.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan charged out of the gate as Brooke Henricks hit a three point shot.  The Pioneers quickly countered with a three pointer by Blayre Shultz.  However, a three out of the hands of Allie Newberry allowed the Warriors to regain the lead.  Southern Wesleyan continued to push ahead with layups by Henricks and Newberry.  Tusculum fought back as a three point shot by Alyssa Walker put them down 12-11 to the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan would not relent as Shelby Glance collected a pass from Brittany Mack and put up a three point shot to extend the Warriors lead to 17-15.

The Warriors maintained their intensity in the second quarter as Brittany Mack put up a jump shot.  Caroline Reese stole the ball away from the Pioneers and sunk a three point shot to extend the Warriors lead to 24-18.  Tusculum would not go down quietly as a three pointer by Mya Belton and a layup by Alyssa Walker put them ahead by one.  The Warriors were not discouraged as they regained the lead on a jump shot by Shelby Glance.  With under a minute on the clock, Brittany Mack laid the ball up into the basket to give Southern Wesleyan a 32-31 halftime lead.

The Pioneers attacked quickly in the third quarter as Blayre Shultz laid the ball up into the basket.  They pushed further ahead on a layup by Mya Belton.  The Warriors fought back as Brittany Mack stole the ball away and laid it up into the basket on a fast break.  Mack then sunk a three point shot to put the Warriors down four points to the Pioneers with just under five minutes left on the clock.  Tusculum maintained the intensity, but a last second three pointer by Tristen Berry kept Southern Wesleyan within striking distance.

The Warriors took the first points of the final quarter on free throws by Brittany MackAllie Newberry hit a three point basket and then a jump shot to put the Warriors within one point of the Pioneers.  Free throw baskets by Brooke Henricks allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a one point lead with just under seven minutes left in the quarter.  Tusculum broke away as layups by Alyssa Walker and Mya Belton allowed them to regain a three point lead.  Back-to-back layups by Brooke Henricks and Tristen Berry allowed Southern Wesleyan to cut into Tusculum's lead.  Despite a last second layup by Brittany Mack, the Warriors fell to the Pioneers in a 65-59 final score.
 
 
 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return home on December 19 as they host the Coker Cobras at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will then enter the Christmas break period.  They will return to the court on December 30 as they travel to Cullowhee, NC to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in exhibition play.  The Warriors will resume Conference Carolinas action on January 4 as they travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 5 p.m.
