Spartanburg, SC – Southern Wesleyan dropped their first exhibition game of the season against the USC Upstate Spartans in a 69-51 final score.
The Warriors shot 35.1% from the field in the loss to the Spartans. Shelby Glance and Brittany Mack led the team with 14 points. They were followed by Allie Newberry and
Caroline Reese with 10 points each. Of the 15 assists,
Brooke Henricks and Newberry each had four assists. Mack recorded six steals during the game. Southern Wesleyan picked up 27 rebounds with Alexis Glover leading the team with five. She was followed by Glance with four rebounds.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan jumped out early as Brittany Mack put up a pull up jump shot to give the Warriors the early 2-0 point lead. The Spartans countered as a layup by Isabella Geraci tied it up, but the Warriors regained the lead on a jump shot by Allie Newberry. USC Upstate continued to challenge to tie the game back up. However, back-to-back three point shots by
Caroline Reese and Brittany Mack allowed Southern Wesleyan to extend their lead to 13-7. Nyla Walker put up a shot to allow the Spartans to tie the game back up at thirteen points apiece. USC Upstate would not relent as they pushed further ahead on a three point shot by Cali Levine.
A basket by Zora Fran-Chinn allowed the Spartans to take a ten point lead. However, a hook shot by Allie Newberry put the Warriors back within eight. USC Upstate continued to extend their lead as a three point shot by Cali Levine put the Spartans ahead 33-17. The Warriors chipped away at the Spartans lead on a three pointer by
Caroline Reese and free throws by Nyah Garner. However, the Spartans led 47-24 at the half.
USC Upstate extended their lead to 52-24 on a three pointer by Isabella Geraci and jump shot by Nyla Walker. Brittany Mack put up a pull up jump shot. Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge as Shelby Glance collected a pass from
Brooke Henricks and stepped beyond the arc to sink a three pointer. Back-to-back jump shots by Mack and Glance allowed the Warriors to come to 34-56 behind the Spartans. A layup by Walker allowed the Spartans to take a 25 point lead.
The Spartans struck first in the final quarter as a layup by Vera Soderblom gave them a thirty point lead.
Caroline Reese collected a pass from Shelby Glance and put up a jump shot for the Warriors. A turn around jump shot by Glance allowed the Warriors to come to 39-65 behind the Spartans. Southern Wesleyan continued their push as Glance took a pass from Reese and stepped beyond the arc to put up a three point basket. Back-to-back baskets by Glance allowed the Warriors to come to within twenty-one points. However, the Spartans took the game in a 69-51 final score.
What's Next
Southern Wesleyan will open up the regular season on November 11 as they take on the Georgia College Bobcats at 6 p.m. The Warriors will remain on the road as they take on the Augusta Jaguars on November 12 at 3 p.m. Southern Wesleyan will then travel to Bluefield, WV on November 16 to take on Bluefield State University at 5:30 p.m.
