Four Warriors Post Double Digits in Road Loss to Bulldogs

Wilson, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Barton Bulldogs on Tuesday evening in an 87-68 final score.

The Warriors shot 44.1% from the field.  Four Warriors posted double digits during the game with Brittany Mack leading the team with 19 points.  She was followed by Tristen Berry with 13, Allie Newberry with 11 and Shelby Glance with 10.  Brooke Henricks recorded four of the 13 assists.  She went on to lead the team with three steals.  Southern Wesleyan recorded 37 rebounds with Alexis Glover leading the team with nine.  She was followed by Newberry with eight rebounds.

"We started the game well, but when you play a championship level program like Barton, you know you will get a complete game.  The 8-0 run to start the third quarter showed that and our response to just being close.  Proud of how we did not give up and competed until the end.  We have positives to take and we see the work that needs to be done."



 
How It Happened

The Warriors struck quickly as Brittany Mack drove the ball toward the net for a layup.  However, a jump shot out of the hands of Michaela Dixon allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game back up.  Barton pushed ahead to take a four point lead on a layup by Lauren Mingo, but Southern Wesleyan challenged right back as a layup by Tristen Berry put the Warriors back within two.  A driving layup by Allie Newberry allowed the Warriors to tie the game back up. Barton distanced themselves once again as Erial Owens laid the ball up to give them a 16-11 point advantage.

The Bulldogs took the first points of the second quarter on a layup by Erial Owens.  Southern Wesleyan continued to put up a fight as Brittany Mack got the ball down to Allie Newberry, who put up a jump shot to put the Warriors back within five.  Mack drove to the basket and laid the ball up into the net.  Southern Wesleyan continued to push as, with under three minutes on the clock in the second quarter, Tristen Berry put up a three point shot to give the Warriors a 28-26 point advantage.  However, the Bulldogs pushed ahead as a layup by Lauren Mingo gave them a 30-28 point lead.  Barton extended their lead once again, but Brooke Henricks put up a driving layup to keep the Warriors within five.  However, at the half the Bulldogs led 37-30.

The Bulldogs started the third quarter with back-to-back three point shots by Cierra Revelle and Lauren Mingo to give them a 43-30 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan countered with a driving layup by Tristen Berry.  However, a three pointer by Lauren Walker extended the Bulldogs' lead to 51-33.  The Warriors continued to chip away at the Bulldogs lead as Shelby Glance laid the ball up into the net.  However, the Bulldogs took a 60-35 point lead as Revelle made her second three point shot of the evening.  Layups by Glance and Brittany Mack allowed the Warriors to come to within twenty-one. 

Southern Wesleyan took the first point of the final quarter on a free throw by Brooke HenricksShelby Glance followed up with a jump shot off a pass from Allie Newberry.  However, Emerie Tillmon sunk her first three of the evening to extend Barton's lead to 75-48.  Once again Glance laid the ball up into the basket for the Warriors.  Brittany Mack collected a pass from Glance and drove to the basket for a layup to put the Warriors down 75-54 with just under eight minutes left in the quarter.  Newberry collected a defensive rebound and got the ball down to Tristen Berry who laid it up into the net.  Alexis Glover sent the ball over to Mack who stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three point shot.  Despite a last second layup by Nyah Garner, the Warriors fell to the Bulldogs 87-68.
 


 
What's Next

The Warriors will host their home opener on November 26 as they welcome the Anderson Trojans to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. tip-off.  They will then take on the Wofford Terriers on November 28 in exhibition play.  Southern Wesleyan will then host Belmont Abbey on November 30 at 5 p.m.  They will then travel to Due West, SC on December 3 to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet.
