Southern Wesleyan Drops Contest Against Mount Olive

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Friday evening in a 3-0 final score.

The Warriors collected 14 kills with Amber Bass and Emily Ellis leading the team with six kills each.  Ashley Sexton recorded six of the 14 assists.  Both Bass and Jarena Byers had service aces.  Southern Wesleyan recorded 39 digs with Sexton leading the team with nine.  Ellie Johnson followed with eight.  Riley Young and Gavirelle Elswick each led the team with three of the seven blocks.

How It Happened

Set One
The Trojans charged out of the gate as kills by Neza Pec and Camryn Huber put them ahead 3-0.  Southern Wesleyan countered as both Emily Ellis and Amber Bass put down kills to allow the Warriors to come within one.  Mount Olive pushed ahead as a kill by Karoline Cox put them ahead 8-5.  However, a kill by Bass put the Warriors within two of the Trojans.  An ace by Morgan Prots allowed the Trojans to extend their lead to 11-7.  The Warriors continued to put up a fight as blocks by Bass and Riley Young put the Warriors down six points.  However, the Trojans took the first set 25-14.
 
Set Two
Southern Wesleyan struck quickly in the second set as an assisted block by Emily Ellis and Gavirelle Elswick put them ahead 2-0.  Emily Ellis killed the ball to extend their lead.  A kill by Karoline Cox put the Trojans within two, but kills by Emily Ellis and Amber Bass allowed the Warriors to extend their lead to 8-5.  Mount Olive continued to challenge to tie the set up 12-12 on a kill by Amara Eziakonwa, but kills by Ellis and Bass allowed the Warriors to regain their lead.  Southern Wesleyan pushed ahead on a kill by Tiyonnah Brown and a block by Riley Young.  However, Mount Olive fought back to regain the lead and take a 25-23 point second set victory.
 
Set Three
An ace by Jenna Myer allowed the Trojans to take the early lead.  Mount Olive pushed ahead on kills by Jenna Myer and Amara Eziakonwa.  Emily Ellis put down a kill to put the Warriors down 17-5.  The Trojans pushed ahead, but blocks by Emily Ellis, Gavirelle Elswick and Trinity Eichman allowed the Warriors to challenge the Trojans lead.  However, Mount Olive won the final set in a 25-10 final.
 
 
 
What's Next

The Warriors will remain at home on October 22 as they host the UNC Pembroke Braves at 2 p.m.   They will then travel to Franklin Springs, GA on October 25 to take on the Emmanuel Lions.  Southern Wesleyan will then host the Converse Valkyries on October 29 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day festivities.  They will wrap up the regular season in Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on November 1 as they host the Erskine Flying Fleet.
