Warriors Fall to the Hawks

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Chowan Hawks on Friday evening in a 58-45 final score.

The Warriors shot 27.4% from the field and were 50% from the free throw line.  Tristen Berry and Nakia Hooks led the team with nine points apiece.  They were followed by both Brittany Mack and Sasha Schoenborn with eight points.  The Warriors collected eight assists with Brooke Henricks leading the team with three.

Defensively, the Warriors collected 33 rebounds.  Nakia Hooks led the team with seven rebounds.  Kayla Garrett posted the lone two blocks of the game for the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan had 10 steals with Brittany Mack leading the team with five.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan took the first points of the game on a layup by Nakia Hooks, but Chowan countered with a three pointer by Olivia Gaither to put the Hawks on top by one.  The Hawks continued to push ahead with baskets by Monique Jones and Aniah Patterson.  The Warriors countered as Nakia Hooks passed the ball beyond the arc to Tristen Berry who put up a three to put Southern Wesleyan down by two points.  Chowan continued to distance themselves from Southern Wesleyan as a layup by Destiny Robinson put the Hawks up by eleven points at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors took the first points of the second quarter as Brooke Henricks laid the ball up into the basket.  However, a jump shot by Patterson allowed the Hawks to regain their eleven point lead.  Southern Wesleyan continued to chip away at Chowan's lead as Brittany Mack put up a jump shot.  Chowan would not back down as Gaither and Keibra Hopkins put the ball into the net to extend their lead to 27-16.  A layup by Mack put the Warriors back within twelve with just over two minutes left.  Despite a layup by Nakia Hooks and free throws by Brittany Mack, the Warriors trailed 33-22 at halftime.

The Hawks jumped out early in the third quarter as Destiny Robinson made a jump shot.  They continued to push ahead as Tyaysia Sharpe stepped beyond the arc and sunk a three to push them ahead 38-23.  The Warriors countered with a layup by Brooke Henricks, but back-to-back three point shots by Patterson and Sharpe allowed the Hawks to extend their lead to twenty points.

Chowan kicked off the final quarter with free throw baskets by Keibra Hopkins.  Shelby Glance sunk a jump shot to put the Warriors within twenty-three points.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge as Nakia Hooks laid the ball up.  Back-to-back jump shots by Hooks and Sasha Schoenborn allowed the Warriors to come to 54-35 behind the Hawks.  Schoenborn continued to attack the net as she sunk back-to-back three point shots to allow the Warriors to come within fifteen points with just under two minutes left to play.  Despite a late three by Tristen Berry, the Warriors fell to the Hawks in a 58-45 final score.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on January 24 as they host the UNC Pembroke Braves at 5 p.m.  They will then travel to Banner Elk, NC on January 26 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 5 p.m.  The Warriors will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 29 as they host the North Greenville Crusaders.  They will remain at home on January 31 to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders and February 1 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats.
