Southern Wesleyan Falls in Tight Competition to Georgia Southwestern

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in a close match-up to the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 final score.

The Warriors out shot the Hurricanes on Saturday, collecting 12 shots and seven shots on goal in the loss.  Madi Wurst led the team with two shots on goal.  Samantha Benner played all ninety minutes in goal for Southern Wesleyan, collecting two saves in the process.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan struck early as both Brianna Guinn and Joy Namyst took shots on the goal, but Grace O'Shaughnessy prevented the Warriors from taking the lead.  The Hurricanes countered with shots on their own, but the Warriors maintained the pressure as Grace Williams took a shot on the goal.  Despite last minute shots on goal by Natalie Thompson and Wurst, the game was tied 0-0 at the half.

Georgia Southwestern took the first shot in the second half as Payton Johnson and Zyandra Thomas took shots on the goal.  Southern Wesleyan countered with a shot by Madi Wurst, but O'Shaughnessy saved it from the net.  Off a corner kick, Grace Grech got a foot on the ball to put it in the net to give the Canes a 1-0 lead.  The Warriors fought back with shots on goal by Brooke Cash and Bryanna Pickens, but O'Shaughnessy and the Canes defense kept the Warriors from tying the game up.  The Hurricanes attempted to extend their lead but Samantha Benner collected the ball to keep it out of the net.  The Canes went on to win the game 1-0.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Lander University on September 8 to take on the Bearcats at 5 p.m.  They will remain on the road on September 11 as they open up Conference Carolinas play in Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 1:30 p.m.  The Warriors will return to Childs Field on September 18 as they welcome the Francis Marion Patriots at 5 p.m.
