Home Runs Not Enough to Power Warriors Past Crusaders

Belmont, NC – Southern Wesleyan was swept by the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on Friday afternoon in 3-2 and 6-4 final scores.

The Warriors recorded two hits in the first game of the afternoon.  Emma Collins doubled and Savannah Huff homered in the loss to the Crusaders.  Huff had the lone RBI.  Delanie Laudenbacher started the first game, pitching five innings while striking out three batters.  Collins came in to pitch in relief.

Southern Wesleyan collected 11 hits with three Warriors recording two hits in the game two loss.  Delaney Byers, Savannah Huff, and Addi Johnson all homered during the game.  Johnson also doubled.  Byers led the team with two of the four RBIs.  Four Warriors walked during the game and Haley Bertie stole a base.  Ashton Martin started the second game of the series with Megan Vaughn and Emma Collins coming in to pitch in relief for the Warriors.  Combined they collected six strikeouts.

How It Happened
Game One
Belmont Abbey kicked off the game as a double by Whitley brought Pon in to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage.  However, the Warriors countered in the top of the fifth inning.  Emma Collins doubled down the left field line.  With one on, Addi Johnson reached first on a throwing error that allowed Collins to come in and tie the game 1-1.

A wild pitch allowed the Crusaders to take the lead.  The Warriors maintained the pressure as Savannah Huff drilled a home run over the wall to allow Southern Wesleyan to tie the game back up 2-2.  However, a late single by Whitley allowed the Crusaders to win the game 3-2.

 
Game Two
Southern Wesleyan struck first as Addi Johnson drilled a home run over the left center field wall in the top of the second.  However, the Crusaders countered in the bottom of the second inning with a home run off the bat of Cooper to tie the game up 1-1.

With one out in the top of the third, Savannah Huff homered over the left field wall to allow the Warriors to put them ahead 2-1.

Belmont Abbey regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Whitley and Cooper both homered to put the Crusaders on top 6-2. 

Southern Wesleyan challenged in the top of the sixth inning.  With one out, Emma Jo Wolfe singled and then advanced to second on a ground out by Addie NugentDelaney Byers followed with a home run over the center field wall to bring Wolfe in.  However, the Warriors dropped game two 6-4.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on April 10 as they travel to Mount Olive, NC to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 2 and 4 p.m.  They will then return to Varsity Field on April 16 to host the Converse Valkyries at 4 and 6 p.m.  Southern Wesleyan will wrap up the regular season on the road as they travel to Due West, SC to take on the Erskine Flying Fleet on April 17.
