Coach Schneider says…
"I am so proud of our team. The amazing seniors have transformed this program into something to be proud of. They have laid the groundwork for the future Warriors of the program. Tonight was a special night for them and the program. As we accomplished many great things. Three players had hat tricks. Ten players scored. All of our seniors were able to score as well! We broke many records this evening and it was a great team win. I'm so happy that the seniors were able to finish their last regular season like that. Helping us finish fifth in the conference in the regular season with so many record breaking stats."
How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan charged out of the gate as
Amy Pfefferkorn scored the first goal of the game within the first minute of play to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. The Warriors continued to push ahead as Pfefferkorn collected the ball and passed it over to
Tabitha Beecher who put it into the back of the cage to extend the lead to 2-0. The Valkyries challenged, but the Warriors thwarted their attacks as
Betsy Bovee attacked the cage to score her first goal of the afternoon. Beecher broke away and got around the Converse defense to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead before the Valkyries scored their first goal of the afternoon off a free position shot by Sharlize Burgos. Converse continued to attack, cutting the Warriors lead in half but a second goal by Pfefferkorn allowed the Warriors to get back on top by three. After a yellow card allowed the Warriors to play man-up,
Jocelyn Cosgrove collected the ball and put it into the cage to extend Southern Wesleyan's lead to 7-2. Back-to-back goals by Pfefferkorn and Beecher pushed the Warriors lead to 9-2 with just over twelve minutes left in the first half. Southern Wesleyan continued to attack with goals by Beecher, Bovee and Pefferkorn to put the Warriors ahead by ten, but the Valkyries countered with a goal by Elizabeth Stevens allowed Converse to get back within nine. However, that was short lived as
Jairy Sandoval scored her first goal of the afternoon to put Southern Wesleyan back on top by ten. A last minute goal by Pfefferkorn put Southern Wesleyan ahead 14-3 at the half.
The Warriors charged out of the gate in the second half as Pfefferkorn passed the ball up to
Kelsey Hawkins to drill it into the cage to give Southern Wesleyan a 15-3 goal lead. Converse countered with a shot by Kaleigh McSwain, but
Kaeleigh McDaniel defended the cage to keep the ball from going in. With just over twenty-six minutes left on the clock,
Yael Echeverria scored her first goal of the afternoon. Cosgrove got the ball to
Betsy Bovee to score, and then minutes later, Cosgrove got the ball to
Amari Cunningham for her to score her first goal of her career. Cunningham's goal was not only her career first, but allowed the Warriors to set the school record in most goals scored in a game. Despite more shots by the Valkyries, the Warriors continued to push ahead with goals by Echeverria and
Haylee Cureton to put Southern Wesleyan on top 20-3. Converse challenged, but Southern Wesleyan continued to pepper the cage with shots by
Rebecca Fetters and
Tricia Sands. Sands got around the Valkyries defense to score Southern Wesleyan's twenty-first goal of the evening. A last minute goal by Cureton allowed the Warriors to win the game in a 22-3 final score.
