How It Happened
Chowan struck early in the first half as Kaitlyn Waterman passed the ball up to Carolina Lucci who spun around the diving
Taylor Hanzel to put the Hawks on top 1-0. Southern Wesleyan countered as they drove the ball down toward the goal, but Chowan thwarted their attacks to push the ball back to the other side of the field. A second goal by Lucci allowed the Hawks to extend their lead to 2-0 after eleven minutes of play. Trailing the Hawks by three,
Ashley Allen drove to the goal, but her shot was scooped up by Allison Traub to prevent the Warriors from cutting into their lead. Allen continued to attack the ball as she broke away from the pack and got around the Hawks goal keeper to put the Warriors down 3-1 after thirty minutes of play. The Warriors maintained the pressure as
Cayla Hughes took a shot on the goal, but the Hawks blocked her attempt to cut into Chowan's lead further.
Chowan furthered their lead in the second half as Michelle Maksimovic put in the Hawks fourth goal of the game. Southern Wesleyan challenged back with a shot by
Ashton Irby that went over the goal. The Hawks continued to pepper the goal, but
Taylor Hanzel saved the ball from reaching the back of the net.
Bryanna Pickens and
Leesee Chastain put up back-to-back shots on goal. The Warriors maintained the pressure, but, despite a late shot on goal by
Mallory Butler, the Hawks went on to win the game in a 4-1 final score.
