Coach Morrell says…
"Really proud of the effort and fight today. It certainly wasn't always pretty, and there are some things we can clean up. But if they bring that level of heart and desire to every game, we'll be just fine. It was a great goal by
Joy Namyst early in the game and then a great team effort to get the clean sheet, some great saves by
Samantha Benner and
Taylor Hanzel. Really happy for them."
How It Happened
Erskine challenged early as Edie deMedicis took a shot that went out the top, however Southern Wesleyan maintained the pressure against the Flying Fleet. On a throw in by
Grace Williams,
Joy Namyst collected the ball and shot it into the upper corner of the net to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead after eleven minutes of play. The Flying Fleet countered with several shots on the goal, but
Samantha Benner and the Warriors defense got in the way of the shots to keep Erskine from tying the game up.
Hayleigh Von Ins took a shot after twenty-eight minutes of play, but Cheyenne Fuller saved the ball to keep Southern Wesleyan from extending their lead at the half.
Emily Corriher kicked off the second half for the Warriors with a shot that went out of the top. The Flying Fleet countered with shots by Jane Ashley Meredith, but
Samantha Benner got in the way to save the ball. The Warriors continued to attack the net with shots by
Heily Hernandez and
Bryanna Pickens, but Fuller and the Erskine defense continued to block Southern Wesleyan's attempts at extending their lead further.
Makala Latsch and
Hope Robson put in last minute shots on goal for the Warriors, but Fuller continued to keep the Warriors off the board in the second half. Southern Wesleyan went on to win their first Conference Carolinas game of the season 1-0.
