Southern Wesleyan Picks Up The Sweep Against Trinity Baptist

Jacksonville, FL – Southern Wesleyan swept the Trinity Baptist Eagles on Friday afternoon in 7-2 and 9-0 final scores.

The Warriors recorded 15 hits in the first game of the series.  Three Warriors led the way with three hits.  Delaney Byers, Emma Collins and Lydia Clanton all doubled with both Byers and Collins each hitting two doubles during the game.  Byers led the team with three of the seven RBIs.  She was followed by Ashton Martin with two RBIs.  Three Warriors walked and Addi Johnson had three stolen bases.  Megan New was hit by a pitch.  Megan Vaughn pitched a complete game for Southern Wesleyan, striking out seven while allowing four hits.

Southern Wesleyan had nine hits in the second game of the afternoon with Lydia Clanton leading the team with two hits.  Both Clanton and Kaitlyn Stewart doubled during the game.  Savannah Huff recorded three of the seven RBIs.  Five Warriors walked with Delaney Byers leading the team with two.  Both Byers and Addie Nugent recorded stolen bases.  Ashton Martin started game two, pitching two innings while striking out four.  Emma Collins pitched in relief and collected four strikeouts.

"It was nice just to be out competing.  I thought our hitters did a good job throughout the day executing the things that we have been working on hard in practice.  We look forward to playing again tomorrow, and then hopefully continuing to develop team chemistry throughout next week before we begin conference play next Friday."

 
How It Happened

Game One
Southern Wesleyan jumped out early as Lydia Clanton doubled to right field and then an infield single by Ashton Martin brought Delaney Byers up to bat with one out in the top of the second inning.  Byers knocked a ball to deep right center for a double that brought both Clanton and Martin in to score and give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage. 

The Warriors continued the offensive in the top of the third inning.  Addi Johnson singled and then advanced to third base on a stolen base and wild pitch to get in scoring position.  Lydia Clanton followed with a walk to put runners on the corners.  Clanton stole second base.  With both runners in scoring position, Ashton Martin singled up the middle to score both Johnson and Clanton and give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage.  Claire Ellison came in to pinch run and advanced to third on a single by Emma Jo Wolfe.  With two out, Delaney Byers singled to center field to bring Ellison in to score. 

In the top of the fourth inning, Megan New reached first after being hit by a pitch. An error by the center fielder allowed Emma Collins to reach first and put New in scoring position.  Addi Johnson laid down a bunt single to load up the bases and bring Lydia Clanton up to bat.  With the bases loaded, Clanton singled to bring New across home plate and put the Warriors on top 6-0.  Ashton Martin followed with a fielder's choice that kept the bases loaded but got Collins out at home plate.  With the bases loaded and one out, Addie Nugent hit a sacrifice fly allowed Johnson to come in to score and put Southern Wesleyan's lead at 7-0.

Trinity Baptist countered in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored two.  Despite the Eagles challenge, the Warriors went on to win game one 7-2 final score.
 
Game Two
The Warriors took the early lead in game two, as Emma Collins singled to left field to bring Delaney Byers home and give Southern Wesleyan a 1-0 advantage.

Southern Wesleyan continued to attack the plate in the second inning as Emma Joe Wolfe singled to score Lydia ClantonAddie Nugent came in to score on the next play.  With Emma Jo Wolfe and Delaney Byers in scoring position, Savannah Huff singled to right field to bring both home and put the Warriors ahead 5-0.

Trinity Baptist challenged, but Emma Collins pitched out of a jam to keep the Eagles from getting on the board.

The Warriors continued to push ahead in the top of the fifth inning.  Lydia Clanton led off with a double and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Micah Williams.  With one on and one out, Addie Nugent was hit by a pitch.  Nugent stole second to put both runners in scoring position and bring Claire Ellison up to bat.  Ellison singled to left to bring Clanton home.  Delaney Byers laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Addie Nugent.  A deep sacrifice fly by Savannah Huff allowed Ellison to come in to put the Warriors on top 8-0 in the fifth.  Kaitlyn Stewart followed with a double that allowed Byers to score and give the Warriors a 9-0 game two victory.

 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on March 6 as they travel to Bluftton, SC to face the University of South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks at 2 and 4:30 p.m.  They will then host their Conference Carolinas opener on March 12 as they take on the Barton Bulldogs starting at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will then face the Chowan Hawks on March 13 at 1 p.m.
