Warriors Drop Game to Lions

Franklin Springs, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Emmanuel College Lions in a 75-53 final score on Tuesday evening.

The Warriors shot 33.3% from the field and went 41.7% from beyond the three point line.  Amy Soumare led the Warriors with 13 points in the loss.  Soumare was followed by Brooke Henricks with nine points, and Sasha Schoenborn and Caroline Reese each with eight points.  The Warriors had 10 assists during the game with Diamond Ellison leading the team with three.

Southern Wesleyan had 22 rebounds during the game.  Soumore led the team with seven rebounds during the game.  The Warriors recorded eight steals during the game with Lonesha Lee leading the three and Ellison following with two.  Henricks had two blocks during the game.

How It Happened

Emmanuel stormed out of the gate, taking a 9-0 lead before free throw baskets by Brooke Henricks allowed the Warriors to come behind the Lions 9-2.  Henricks sunk a basket from beyond the three point line to put the Warriors down four points.  A layup by Amy Soumare allowed the Warriors to come to 7-11 behind the Lions.  Emmanuel continued to push ahead with baskets by Mari Jonassen and Jazmin Allen.  However, the Warriors continued to chip away on layups by Soumare and a 3-point shot by Caroline Reese to put them down 14-22.

The Lions kicked off the second quarter with a jump shot by Zuriyah Davis, but the Warriors countered with a jump shot of their own as Reese put the ball into the net to keep them within ten points.  A three point shot by Lonesha Lee put Southern Wesleyan down 19-28 with just over seven minutes left before half.  Emmanuel continued to push ahead, but the Warriors countered every advance with a basket of their own.  Sasha Schoenborn sunk a three to make the score 23-30.  Davis of the Lions laid the ball up to put the Lions on top 37-23 at the half.

A layup by Mari Jonassen put the Lions up 39-23 to kick off the second half, but the Warriors countered with a jump shot by Lee.  Despite trailing the Lions, the Warriors continued to fight as Henricks took a pass from Diamond Ellison and sunk a basket from beyond the three point line.  Ellison and Tristen Berry sunk back-to-back three point shots to put the Warriors down 34-53.

Emmanuel took a 60-39 point lead on a jump shot by Breanna Locke.  Schoenborn made a jump shot off a pass from Berry to put the Warriors own 41-62.  The Lions continued to push their lead further, but the Warriors countered on a 3-pointer by Schoenborn and a jump shot by Soumare to put Southern Wesleyan 46-69 behind.  Despite a last second jump shot by Ellison, the Warriors fell to the Lions 75-53.

 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 11 as they travel to Tigerville, SC to take on the North Greenville Crusaders.  They will then welcome the Crusaders to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on February 13 for game two of the season.  The Warriors will then travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on the Converse Valkyries on February 15 at 3 p.m.
