Warriors Split Home Opener to Pioneers

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan split the doubleheader against the Tusculum Pioneers on Wednesday.  The Warriors won game one of the day 7-1 before dropping game two in a 6-0 final.

Southern Wesleyan recorded 11 hits in the game one victory on Wednesday evening.  Megan New led the team with three hits and Emma Collins followed with two.  Collins went on to record three of the seven RBIs of the game.  Two Warriors walked during the game.  New and Collins each doubled during the game.  Both Savannah Huff and Collins homered.  The Warriors had three stolen bases during the game with Delaney Byers leading the team with two.  Delanie Laudenbacher pitched all seven innings of game one of the afternoon.  Laudenbacher recorded 11 strikeouts while only allowing one run to pick up her first win of the season.

The Warriors had four hits in the second game of the day.  Delaney Byers and Emma Collins each walked once during the game.  Both Addi Johnson and Haley Bertie stole bases during the game.  Ashton Martin started the second game of the day, recording three strikeouts during the game.  Megan Vaughn and Emma Collins came in to pitch in relief for the Warriors, combining for four strikeouts.

How It Happened

Game One
Southern Wesleyan kicked of the game as Savannah Huff hit her first home run as a Warrior over the right center field wall to give the Warriors a 1-0 run advantage over the Pioneers in the bottom of the first inning.

The Warriors struck again in the bottom of the third inning.  With two outs, Delaney Byers singled to third and then stole both second and third base.  Savannah Huff followed with a walk to put runners on the corners, but then advanced to second on a stolen base.  A walk to Ashton Martin loaded the bases to bring Lydia Clanton up to bat.  Clanton singled down the right field line to bring both Byers and Huff in give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

Southern Wesleyan extended their lead again in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Megan New led off with a double to left field.  With Micah Williams pinch running, Addi Johnson singled on a bunt to advance Williams to third base.  With one out and runners on the corners, Collins drove a deep home run over the center field wall to put the Warriors on top 6-0.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Collins doubled down the left field line.  Haley Bertie was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on and bring up Bethannie Perrine.  Perrine singled to center field to bring Collins in and put the Warriors up by seven.  Southern Wesleyan went on to win the game in a 7-1 final.
 
Game Two
Tusculum took an early lead in game two of the evening as a double by Alloway allowed Grampp to come in to put the Pioneers on top 1-0.  The Pioneers extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning on a home run by Grampp.  Tusculum continued to push their lead ahead, plating two more runs in the top of the third.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge Tusculum's lead, but the Pioneers were able to thwart all the Warriors attempts.  Tusculum went on to win the second game of the day 6-0.
 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on February 17 as they welcome the Mars Hill Lions to Varsity Field at 3 and 5 p.m.  They will then travel to Dahlonega, GA to take on the University of North Georgia Nighthawks on February 27.  The Warriors will remain on the road on March 5 and 6 as they take on Trinity Baptist College and Flagler College.
