Warriors Challenge Early in Loss to Hawks

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Chowan Hawks on Friday evening in a 3-0 final score.

The Warriors collected 28 kills in the loss to the Hawks.  Amber Bass led the team with 10 kills.  She was followed by Ashlyn Holford (8) and Emily Ellis (7).  Ashley Sexton led the team with 23 of the 26 assists.  Both Kristina Pino and Sexton had service aces in the match.  Holford was a part of four of seven blocks of the evening.  Sexton had 13 of the 53 digs with Bass following with 12 and Jesse Soles behind her with 11.

How It Happened

Set One
The Warriors struck early as Amber Bass delivered a kill to give Southern Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.  An assisted block by Ashley Sexton and Ashlyn Holford pushed the Warriors ahead by two.  Chowan countered with back-to-back kills by Anixa Rosa-Martinez and Anamarie Colon-Calero to tie the first set up.  Southern Wesleyan regained the lead on a kill by Holford, but a kill by Rosa-Martinez tied it back up 4-4.  Kills by Emily Ellis and Tiyonnah Brown push the Warriors on top by two.  The Hawks countered with an assisted block by Colon-Calero and Nyah Powers to give them a 10-9 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan increased the intensity with kills by Amber Bass to put them up on top by one once again.  Chowan regained the lead, but Southern Wesleyan countered their every point with a kill of their own to remain within one.  Despite a late kill by Bass, the Hawks pushed ahead to win the first set 25-21.

Set Two
Southern Wesleyan struck first with a kill by Ashlyn Holford, but Chowan countered seconds later with a kill by Madison Hall to tie it up 1-1.  A kill by Emily Ellis and an assisted block by Ellis and Riley Young allowed the Warriors to push ahead of the Hawks 4-3.  Chowan upped the intensity with a kill by Chloe Putnam to give them a two-point advantage.  The Hawks went on a six point run to put them up 12-5.  Southern Wesleyan countered with a kill by Amber Bass and an assisted block by Bass and Young.  The Hawks continued to persist, winning the second set 25-12.

Set Three
The Hawks struck early on a kill by Anamarie Colon-Calero, but a block by Ashlyn Holford allowed the Warriors to tie it up.  A kill by Emily Ellis allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 2-1 point lead.  Chowan recovered, scoring the next eight points to put them ahead by seven.  An ace by Ashley Sexton allowed the Warriors to cut the Hawks advantage to five points.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge as Tiyonnah Brown attacked the ball and laid down two kills to put the Warriors down 10-15.  Despite a kill by Holford, the Warriors fell to the Hawks in the final set 25-15.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host the Barton Bulldogs on November 6 at 2 p.m. for their final home match of the year.  They will then wrap up the season on the road as they travel to Franklin Springs, GA to take on the Emmanuel Lions at 7 p.m.
