Warriors Unable to Hold onto Early Lead Against Crusaders

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in their Conference Carolinas opener on Tuesday evening in a 76-64 final score.

The Warriors shot 47.2% from the field in the loss to the Crusaders.  Demarcus Addie led the team with 27 points.  Addie went 7-16 from the beyond the arc to give him a 43.7%.  He was followed by Davion Bradford with 11 and Hunter Davis with 10.  Southern Wesleyan collected 13 assists with Davis posting four of them.

Southern Wesleyan collected 27 total rebounds in the game.  Tranard Ferrell led the team with seven rebounds.  Behind Ferrell, the Warriors leading rebounders were Demarcus Addie, Hunter Davis and Ta'Jay Dunlap with four rebounds each.  Ferrell recorded both of the Warriors blocks.  Davion Bradford and Dunlap each had three steals.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan charged out of the gate early on as Davion Bradford collected a pass from Hunter Davis and laid the ball up to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.  They pressed onward as Demarcus Addie sunk the ball from beyond the arc to extend Southern Wesleyan's lead to 7-0.  Belmont Abbey countered with a three point shot by Sean Halloran to put the Crusaders within four points.  A second three by Addie allowed the Warriors to get back on top by five points.  Addie continued to press against the Crusaders defense as he scored again from beyond the arc to extend the Warriors lead to 17-7.  Mario Lacy Jr laid the ball up to put Belmont Abbey down eight points with just over ten minutes left in the first half.  Southern Wesleyan continued to fight ahead as Julian Cameron stole the ball away from Blake Hadley and passed it up to Davion Bradford.  Bradford laid the ball up to give the Warriors a twelve-point lead.  The Crusaders challenged right back with baskets by Lacy.  However, Southern Wesleyan led 34-28 at half time.

The Warriors kicked off the second half with a layup by Hunter Davis, but the Crusaders countered as LJ McCoy collected a pass by Sean Halloran and scored to make the score 36-30.  A layup by Tranard Ferrell pushed the Warriors lead to eight.  However, Belmont Abbey continued to chip away with layups by Halloran to put the Crusaders down three.  The Crusaders would not let up as Bosko Bojovic scored a layup in the paint to put them ahead by one.  However, their lead was short lived as Ta'Jay Dunlap passed the ball to Davis, who laid it up to put Southern Wesleyan back on top by one.  The Warriors continued to press ahead as layups by Dunlap and Davis gave Southern Wesleyan a 44-40 point lead with just over fourteen minutes left in the second half.  Belmont Abbey took the lead, but a dunk by Davis off a fast break allowed Southern Wesleyan to tie the game back up 46-46.  The Crusaders regained the lead on three pointers by Ryan Maslow and Chandler Baker.  Southern Wesleyan challenged back as Demarcus Addie made three point shots to tie the game back up at fifty-six points apiece.  However, Bojovic put the Crusaders back on top with a layup with just over six minutes left.  Despite a late dunk by Ferrell, the Warriors fell to the Crusaders in a 76-64 final.


 
What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Dahlonega, GA on November 27 as they take on the University of North Georgia Nighthawks at 3:30 p.m.  The Warriors will remain on the road on November 30 as they travel to Tigerville, SC to take on the North Greenville Crusaders.  They will then travel to Spartanburg, SC on December 3 to take on the Converse Valkyries.
