Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the number eleven ranked University of Tampa Spartans on Tuesday evening in a 64-36 final score.
The Warriors shot 21.7% from the field with both
Tristen Berry and
Allie Newberry leading the team with six points apiece. They were followed by
Lonesha Lee and
Shelby Glance with five points. The Warriors collected four assists in the game.
Defensively, Southern Wesleyan had 30 rebounds with four Warriors leading the team with four rebounds each.
Nakia Hooks led the team with two of the five blocks. Hooks went on to record three of the 11 steals of the evening. She was followed by
Tristen Berry and
Caroline Reese with two steals each.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan took the first points of the game as
Tristen Berry stole the ball away from the Spartans. Berry passed the ball to
Brooke Henricks who laid it up to give the Warriors a 2-0 point advantage. The lead was short lived as the Spartans tied it up seconds later off a jump shot by Aliyah Abney. A jump shot by Dori Nagy put Tampa ahead 4-2 with just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter of play. Tampa continued to push ahead before a layup by Berry allowed Southern Wesleyan to cut the Spartans lead in half.
The Spartans remained on the offensive in the second quarter as they scored first off a free throw by Dori Nagy and jump shot by Eleanore Marciszewski. The Warriors countered as
Brooke Henricks got the ball to
Shelby Glance who scored from above the arc to put Southern Wesleyan down 19-7. A layup by
Allie Newberry put the Warriors back within ten of the Spartans with just under seven minutes left on the clock. Tampa was not discouraged as they took a 14-point lead on a layup by Marciszewski. The Spartans went on to lead 36-13 at half time.
Tristen Berry charged out of the gate for the Warriors in the third quarter as they made a layup to make the score 36-15, but the Spartans countered with a jump shot of their own. Southern Wesleyan chipped away with baskets by both
Lonesha Lee and
Nakia Hooks. However, Tampa continued to push ahead of Southern Wesleyan. A layup by
Kayla Garrett made the score 51-23.
In the final quarter, a layup by Danielle Delano put the Spartans up by thirty points, but
Shelby Glance put up a jump shot to cut Tampa's lead to twenty-eight. The Spartans continued to push ahead with a three point shot by Delano. Southern Wesleyan was not discouraged as both
Allie Newberry and
Cambria Parker scored to make the score 62-35. However, Tampa went on to win the game in a 64-36 final.
What's Next
The Warriors will travel to Spartanburg, SC on November 19 to take on the Wofford Terriers in exhibition action at 5 p.m . They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on November 23 to host their Conference Carolinas opener against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders at 5:30 p.m. Southern Wesleyan will then travel to Tigerville, SC to take on the North Greenville Crusaders on November 30 at 5:30 p.m.
